Horny beer names, Harry Potter, and a good ad-lib
PaleBlueScot Slices of Life By James on 1/31/2007 11:14 AM

There is a local brewery (Sweetwater) that makes some great beers and they’re also known for their attention-getting names.  The flagship beer is Sweetwater 420 and while they claim there is no drug connotation, I don’t believe it for one second.  More amusing are the horny names they’ve given some of the other beers.  When Georgia finally passed into law several years ago ...

Making a cynical bastard smile...twice
PaleBlueScot Slices of Life By James on 1/29/2007 12:39 PM

Parties can sometimes be hit or miss but I was at 2 different kinds of parties this weekend that made my day for different reasons.  Sometimes it’s the small things in life that bring the biggest smiles.

The first was with a group of ex-coworkers who get together to have dinner at someone’s house every few months or so.  We’re all so “inbred” it’s gotten to the point where we’ve worked with each other for 2 or 3 different compa ...

Extra Innings, but Limited Access
PaleBlueScot Sports By James on 1/25/2007 1:11 PM

While last year’s travails with Comcast wound up with me getting a free season of MLB Extra Innings (since they run on the same channels as NHL Center Ice), I was not pleased when I read a press release last week.  In the release, Major League Baseball announced that their Extra Innings baseball package would only be available on DirecTV beginning next year.  I think this is a mistake for many reasons.

First, the NFL is also in ...

Released
PaleBlueScot Slices of Life By James on 1/24/2007 11:52 AM

Well, the Gods of Justice smiled on me yesterday and let me out of jury duty.  After last year’s 2 ½ week fiasco, I wasn’t quite ready to be a civil servant again.  Thankfully Dekalb County, unlike other counties in metro Atlanta, has a “One Day or One Trial” policy.  So if you don’t get called for jury duty the day you report, you don’t have to come back the rest of the week.

Please don't call my name
PaleBlueScot By James on 1/23/2007 8:19 AM

Today I report for jury duty in Dekalb County.  Since the 2 1/2 weeks I served on jury duty last year was for a Federal criminal case, the county doesn't care about that.  I really hope to not get picked today, otherwise tomorrow's blog entry will include words like "cocksuckery" and "assfuckedness", among others.

If it weren't a punishable offense, I'd like to make up what my profession is when they ask me.  Instead of a Quality Assurance Analyst for an internet software company, I will be a truck driver who delivers porn and fireworks.

Miami-bound
PaleBlueScot Sports By James on 1/22/2007 11:58 AM

Today is all about football so let’s begin with a certain football team based in the Midwest that’s going to the Super Bowl and I’m not talking about the Colts and their (ironically) horse-faced quarterback!!  While there was no way I would have been able to use my tickets and actually get up there these past two weekends, it was probably for the best since I am recuperating from being sick since Saturday.  Here’s where I begin to question the existence of a God.  What kind of God would allow one of his minions to be so weakened from illness that ...

New neighbors
PaleBlueScot Slices of Life By James on 1/19/2007 10:44 AM

Now that the company I work for has consolidated its space from the whole 22nd floor to half of it, we have a new neighbor on the other side.  Pay By Touch is the new company who inhabits our floor.  They are a firm that deals in biometrics – cool stuff like where you pay for an item by having your fingerprint scanned.  “Big Brother” concerns aside, it’s actually a neat concept but I don’t know if it will take off in the

Sugartits Country Club
PaleBlueScot Miscellany By James on 1/18/2007 9:55 AM

I’m not sure if this story became a nationwide item last week, but they arrested a “madame” and one of her business associates for allegedly running a prostitution ring out of their million dollar mansion.  She was a former Penthouse Pet who ran a high class escort service.  For those of you who don’t know, Sugarloaf Country Club is a very nice gated community that is host to the BellSouth Classic (now the AT&T Classic), which is the tournament held the week before the Masters in Augusta.  The houses are all gigantic and lots of Atlanta& ...

All kinds of ice
PaleBlueScot Sports By James on 1/17/2007 12:20 PM

The Gwinnett Gladiators announced that their March 17th game will be played on green ice in commemoration of St. Patrick’s Day.  While I think it’s a novel concept, depending on the shade of green they use, it could be a real challenge for the players to follow the puck.  I think it will be even harder to follow for the untrained hockey fan’s eye.

Thinking of the color of the ice got me to thinking about ...

Hurricane Ditka
PaleBlueScot Sports By James on 1/16/2007 11:06 AM

Instead of being able to bask in the glory of the Bears finally returning to the NFC Championship game after too long of an absence, the entire country has turned its love fest and stroke-a-thon towards the New Orleans Saints.  Hey, as a human interest story, it’s a nice byline that the Saints are one game from the Super Bowl, but let’s not let reality get in the way of sentiment.

For one, the city of
