Warning: Objects in beer bottle are higher than they appear
By James on 6/19/2008 11:40 AM

Sometimes the eye can be deceived.  I noticed in my beer fridge the other day that a six-pack of a local brew I had purchased seemed to contain a lot less liquid than 12 ounces.  If you see the first picture below, one of the beers appeared to be significantly lower.  The one in the middle was at the same level as the other five but when you compare it to another brewery’s bottle level (Dogfish Head), it was still significantly lower.

Kickin' It Old School
By James on 6/18/2008 10:59 AM

For those of you who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s like I did, you’ll appreciate this t-shirt worn by a coworker yesterday.  We played this all the time in grade school.  Sometimes your opponent would try to cheat by wiggling his "goalpost fingers" as you were about to kick the extra point.  This was when you would aim high and try to make the fooball hit their face in retribution.

In addition to paper football, we also played with 3 pennies.  You would slide one of the pennies between the other 2 without hitting them until you reached your opponent's end of the table.

A First
By James on 6/16/2008 8:50 AM

I feel naked today.  I’ve been working in the real world (i.e. post-college) since 1995 and never before have I worn shorts before.  Ever since I’ve been working for internet-based companies (since 2000), a lot of people wear shorts.  I never had an issue with that but it simply wasn’t something I ever did, as is evidenced by this blog post from earlier this year.

Camera shots from vacation
By James on 6/12/2008 11:59 AM

Some camera pics from our trip to Tybee Island.  Most of the good shots were on our camera so when I download those, I’ll post a link.  I wish I had taken snapshots of a) the beached jellyfish we saw and b) the yellow-taped pool area after The Turd Incident.

More notes from the beach
By James on 6/11/2008 4:55 PM

I will hopefully have pictures for tomorrow (there are delivery delay issues right now between my Blackberry and certain mail servers).  In the meantime here are some postscript thoughts to our small vacation to Tybee Island.

  • Sign of the times – As we drove on to the island, I noted “Hey, look, cheap gas!  It’s only $3.99 here!”

Disjointed thoughts from the beach at Tybee Island
By James on 6/9/2008 11:12 AM
  • While I enjoyed the remoteness of our beach vacation last year near Gulf Shores, AL, there’s also something to be said about being able to walk to one of maybe 10 seafood restaurants within a mile of our beach condo.  Tybee Island is an interesting place.  There’s a lot of nice little residential side streets that help balance out the touristy traps on some of the main strips along the island.
  • We’ve had our fill of seafood and plan on even more tonight.  Seafood, seafood, seafood.  My body mass currently consists of 10 percent crab, 20 percent shrimp, 5 percent scallops, and 2 percent hush puppies.
  • There is a dynasty on this island and the name seems out of place for a deep-South town.  The Chu ...

Things I've learned as a pseudo Pizza Delivery Man
By James on 6/5/2008 9:01 PM

Our rental condo is two blocks from a pizza place.  Since I wanted some additional exercise, I volunteered to go and get it.  I learned several things from this short walking venture.

1 - If you're walking down the street with three extra-large pizza boxes in hand, people will assume you are a pizza delivery man.

2 - Drivers will pull over and ask you for directions since they assume that you, the pizza delivery man, knows the nieghborhood well enough to give directions.

3 - Groups of drunk people will ask to buy your pizzas from you.

I didn't realize it was impossible to walk down a sidewalk unaccosted if you have pizza in hand.  I didn't sell the pizza, I didn't give incorrect directions and I got no tip from my family for deliveri ...

On to Vacation
By James on 6/4/2008 4:47 PM

I'm not sure how Tybee Island, GA is but I’m hoping that since it’s between Hilton Head and Savannah that it won’t be like the northern end of the South Carolina shoreline in WhiteTrashVille, AKA Myrtle Beach.  I’m bringing the trusty ol’ Macbook so if I find time I might try to post some thoughts and even include some photos.

Have a great week.  There’s some
