Welcome to my mind

Winter Classic 2008
Sports By James on 12/31/2007 10:40 AM
I have avoided talking about hockey all year on this blog since it tends to turn people off but I figured what will be on TV tomorrow might entice the casual sports fan to check out NBC at 1 PM.  For those of you utterly bored with football, or for those who like football but are tired of all the insignificant bowl games going on at this time of year, you might want to check out what the NHL is doing.  The Buffalo Sabres are hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins OUTSIDE at Ralph Wilson Stadium where the Bills normally play.

After the smashing success of the NHL’s first outdoor venture a few years ago in Edmonton, it looks like the NHL will be hosting these possibly once a year or every ...

In the land of lepers, the one-armed man is king
Slices of Life By James on 12/28/2007 9:51 AM
Georgia has an odd practice of naming roads and highways after people who are still alive.  While this might be OK when naming a road after, say, ex-presidents (Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Ronald Reagan Parkway come to mind), it becomes dicier when you name a road after a defrocked bishop of a church.  Heck, they’ve even named a part of I-285 Cynthia McKinney Highway and we all know how it’s great to recognize someone so rational and evenhanded as her.  I don’t care what side of the political spectrum you sit on; naming a portion of a highway after her is akin to Louisiana naming a portion of I-10 after David Duke.

Were I someone famous, I really don’t think I’d want a road or building named after me; at least not while alive.  I understand it’s other people who nominate your name but there’s still some ego involved in saying “yes” to something like that.

What got me to thinking about this is what I believe ...

APB for MIA hippo head
Slices of Life By James on 12/26/2007 9:23 PM
If there is a bigger buzzkill day than December 26th, I’d like to know what it is.  All the anticipation is gone, the kids have been overwhelmed with the crazy goings on for a month, the holiday lights aren’t as fun to turn on, and you realize that you still have to eat all those cookies and candy before you can even consider getting back to a saner diet.

Christmas actually went pretty well, minus the very odd feeling of hearing thunder on Christmas.  Look, I know that there wasn’t snow when this Jesus kid was born and he wasn’t born on the pagan holiday of December 25, but there’s something to be said for a white Christmas to get you into the holiday mood.  There were at least 50/50 odds when I was growing up in Detroit that we would have a white Christmas.  I do recall one Christmas where I was crestfallen because it was 63 degrees and rainy.  I couldn’t go outside to try out my new NFL football (with the Pete Roz ...

'Q.A.ing' Santa's cookies
Slices of Life By James on 12/25/2007 12:39 PM
It’s always interesting to get a child’s take on things, especially when it comes to mythical entities like Santa.  In addition to her not wanting to be near Santa and yelling out her requests (see yesterday’s post), she also freaked out last Christmas Eve about Santa being in our house.  She was so distraught about a stranger being in our house and she wouldn’t sleep until I promised her that I would leave Santa a note telling him to please leave the gifts on the front porch and I would bring them in myself and put them under the tree.  Problem solved.

This year, as a 4 year old, she is much braver and is fine with Santa coming into the house.  The nice thing about this is that it allowed her to leave cookies for Santa (chocolate chip, “Santa’s” favorite).  What made this amusing is that prior to setting some on a plate, she wanted to check to make sure the cookies were OK for Santa.  She told Megan that s ...

One more day!
Miscellany By James on 12/24/2007 3:24 PM
Christmas Eve.

Those two words always conjured up great anticipation as a kid and it’s neat to see that same excitement in my 4-year old’s eyes again.  Christmas had been getting stale for me since my mid-20’s and although I still detest the mass consumerism and marketing of the holiday, it still is a time of fun when you’re a child.  Yes, it was nice getting presents but the anticipation was just as fun; from listening to holiday songs to setting up the holiday decorations to getting a few weeks off from school.  As a kid, Christmas really kicks butt.

My only hope is that my 4-year old, when she does eventually realize her parents have been lying to her all these Christmases about a mythical fat guy, doesn’t spill the beans to her younger sister who will still be in that innocent stage.  Ally already is questioning Santa based on her analysis that all the Santas she sees on TV and in photos and at the mal ...

Best...Task...Ever
Slices of Life By James on 12/20/2007 9:22 PM
Prior to our holiday party for work which was on the first Saturday in December, I had what can only be described as the Best Work Assignment Ever.  For those of you that know me, it should come as no surprise that I, along with another coworker who is also a beer enthusiast, was selected to help purchase GOOD BEER for the party!  The guy in charge of making sure our office transitions smoothly with the company that bought us also happens to share a love of good beer and it was his orders that I was following.

Since we were having it at a coworker’s (very nice) house, the money that was saved by not renting a place got added to our food and alcohol budget!  We were given orders to spend $250 on beer alone and to purchase as little of BudMillerCoors as possible.  “Sir, yes Sir!”

I can only describe th ...

Hands at the "2 and 10" position, please
By James on 12/19/2007 11:48 AM

It’s amazing to me that in this day and age of hands-free devices that are affordable to the public; the majority of people don’t use them, especially in the car.  Let’s put aside the obvious caveat that one shouldn’t really be talking on your cell phone in the car if at all possible.  It’s simply not a reality anymore so let’s move forward beyond that and save our ranting for other offenses.   The people with the “Hang Up And Drive” bumper stickers, while I share that sentiment, really need to realize that’s a lost cause at this point.

Did I just say that?

I have to give credit to Big Daddy for inspiring me on several of his posts of things you say that you never thought you would pre-parenthood.

Creativity on strike
Miscellany By James on 12/17/2007 2:16 PM

With the writer’s strike looking to not be resolved any time soon, it looks like my Netflix queue will have a larger-than-normal chunk bitten out of it in the near future.  In a way this is a good thing since, as anyone with kids can attest to, your TV watching time is severely curtailed (not necessarily a bad thing).  We can barely keep up with the shows we watch normally so adding a movie or two to the mix is a luxury sometimes.  Megan and I love movies so the cutback in our normal volume of ones we’d like to see makes our Netflix queue keep on rising like a lump of dough with some out-of-control yeast (Good God, that analogy sucked – see why we need professional writers?).

Holiday card etiquette
Miscellany By James on 12/13/2007 5:55 PM

Note to my newspaper delivery person - when sending out your holiday card solicitation for tips, make sure it’s not the day my paper is sopping wet.  Yes, I’ll tip regardless because that’s what I do, but others might not be so understanding or sympathetic.
