Must See? Or simply Netflix Worthy? |

As much as I love seeing movies at the theatre, being a parent puts a serious cramp in the frequency in which one can actually get to a theatre. This isn’t a huge issue since I enjoy seeing a movie on my good ol’ 57-inch high def television, but there are certain movies where I really would like to get out to see.
For me, movies since Ally was born fell into two categories.

My apologies to whichever blog came up with this first, as the person who sent this to me didn’t know where it originated, but here is a fun game. I've never posted things like this on my blog, as most are cheesy (and this one is too) but this one struck the right cord with me this morning.

Chicago vs. New York |

The gauntlet was thrown down on Wednesday in the Comments section of the blog. The topic was bottled water but there was a reference by my good buddy Ian about how superior New York style pizza is compared to Chicago style. Another old school Chicagoan (Jason’s Mom – don’t worry, I won’t use your real name!) reminded us that flat square pizza is the original Chicago style pizza.

Those of you who know me know that I am big on recycling. I even take my newspaper that I read at lunch back home to put it in my recycle bin. Until we got our new water cooler hooked up at our new office, I took home my used water bottles to place in the recycling bin too. We can debate until we’re blue in the face whether or not items marked for recycling are actually recycled, so let’s just assume they are. Some communities and companies are obviously better at it than others and no system is perfect.

Have you Made It? |

There have been a few instances this past month where I’m reminded of people who have “Made It”. Regardless of whether you like that artist or athlete or actor, the fact remains that if you say “Bend it like…”, you know that person is talking about David Beckham. If someone says “Yo, Adrian” in a stroke-addled tone, you know it’s a reference to Sylvester Stallone’s ‘Rocky’ character.

This post will probably just confirm my OCD for the masses but I need to see if others are as meticulous as me. Besides being a neat freak (although that has changed somewhat at home since taking care of two kids trumps organizing one’s kitchen counter at times), I’ve always been a huge fan of The Rotation.
“What is The Rotation?” you ask. Simply put, it’s when you take the clean items out of your dishwasher and place them at ...

Don't touch the man's beer! |

There’s this show on MOJO-HD (formerly INHD) called Three Sheets where the host, Zane Lamprey, gets to go to different cities and basically get plowed. There haven’t been many new episodes as of late but he did have a New Year’s Pub Crawl special last night where he went to 9 bars in New York. If he truly drank what was shown on this show, more power to him. He’s got a dream job although I’m sure his liver doesn’t share the same sentiments.
What I wanted to bring up was a funny business card I saw in this episode. He was at a Belgian beer bar and a guy had this card which had 3 sides of a rectangle cut in the middle. This allowed him to place it on the lip of his beer glass while he went to relieve himself. The card says “Gone to pee. Leave my beer alone.”& ...

Christmas Eve.
Those two words always conjured up great anticipation as a kid and it’s neat to see that same excitement in my 4-year old’s eyes again. Christmas had been getting stale for me since my mid-20’s and although I still detest the mass consumerism and marketing of the holiday, it still is a time of fun when you’re a child. Yes, it was nice getting presents but the anticipation was just as fun; from listening to holiday songs to setting up the holiday decorations to getting a few weeks off from school. As a kid, Christmas really kicks butt.
My only hope is that my 4-year old, when she does eventually realize her parents have been lying to her all these Christmases about a mythical fat guy, doesn’t spill the beans to her younger sister who will still be in that innocent stage. Ally already is questioning Santa based on her analysis that all the Santas she sees on TV and in photos and at the mal ...

Creativity on strike |

With the writer’s strike looking to not be resolved any time soon, it looks like my Netflix queue will have a larger-than-normal chunk bitten out of it in the near future. In a way this is a good thing since, as anyone with kids can attest to, your TV watching time is severely curtailed (not necessarily a bad thing). We can barely keep up with the shows we watch normally so adding a movie or two to the mix is a luxury sometimes. Megan and I love movies so the cutback in our normal volume of ones we’d like to see makes our Netflix queue keep on rising like a lump of dough with some out-of-control yeast (Good God, that analogy sucked – see why we need professional writers?).

Note to my newspaper delivery person - when sending out your holiday card solicitation for tips, make sure it’s not the day my paper is sopping wet. Yes, I’ll tip regardless because that’s what I do, but others might not be so understanding or sympathetic.
