Stylin'
By James on 5/29/2008 4:55 PM

Not much time to write today but I did want to show a picture (courtesy of the NY Times) I’ve been holding on to since the Pope visited New York City a few months ago.  Who knew the Pope was a connoisseur of pimp shoes?

Not-As-Smart Growth
By James on 5/28/2008 10:52 AM

Yesterday I posted a few examples of newer houses in the neighborhood that I thought fit in with the zeitgeist of the neighborhood.  Today I'm giving examples of ones that swung and missed.  Again, this is totally subjective so what I like doesn’t translate to what everyone else likes.  Take my critiques with a grain of salt.

First up has nothing to do with the house structure itself.  This bungalow was one of the smallest houses in the area until the new owners ...

Smart growth
By James on 5/27/2008 10:24 AM

Today yours truly is going to play the role of local Architectural Critic.  Actually most of my comments are going to be positive, as Decatur residents really “get it” in terms of smart growth and also the rehabbing of old bungalows.  It’s one of Atlanta’s oldest suburbs and is the first suburb you hit heading east from Atlanta.  This means there are a ...

My Dinner Party
By James on 5/23/2008 11:09 AM

Some of the beer-based blogs I read have been participating in asking head brewers what four people they would like to sit down and have dinner with – past or present, living or deceased.  I figured I’d bite and give my list (The General from my blog also suggested this topic).  While there are living people that I would like to have a dinner conversation with, I decided to only include deceased people from the past 200 years since this is a fantasy list anyway.

Spoiled
By James on 5/8/2008 3:08 PM

Even in the midst of these sleepless nights thanks to our restless daughters and stressful days due to work deadlines, I have to remind myself how spoiled we can be.  My battery in my car key remote died the other week and I found myself not realizing how convenient it is to have that.  Besides the fact that it’s handy to have if you don’t recall exactly where you parked your car, it’s convenient to have it ready for you to open if you’re caught in a downpour.  For the few days where I had to manually insert the key into the door, not to mention I had to get into the car if I wanted to open the trunk since there is no external key entry for it, I realized how much we take little things like that for granted.< ...

The highly underrated decimal point
By James on 5/2/2008 1:44 PM

Let’s begin the weekend on a highly cynical note, shall we?  We all know that government entities (local and national) get bogged down in bureaucracy, taking forever to make some decisions and making the wrong decisions when they’re finally made.  Budget shortfalls are as common as budget overruns with construction projects.

Tooth to Cold Hard Cash exchange rate
By James on 4/15/2008 10:44 AM

As my youngest daughter is just getting her baby teeth in this week, it got me to thinking about our soon-to-be-eligible-for-free-money elder daughter.  I’m assuming that the tooth fairy will be visiting our house within a year or so and was wondering what exactly is the going rate on teeth these days?  Is it still a quarter since kids that age don’t have a grasp of what the actual value of money is?  Or has the price of a tooth gone up to a crisp dollar bill?  Has the rising cost of oil bumped up the price to an insane five dollars per tooth?  Is the preferred placement of ...

GTimeWarp
By James on 4/1/2008 8:54 AM

It took me a few minutes to figure it out, but when I went to my GMail login screen today, the concept of time travel for email was introduced.  I wasn’t paying attention to today’s date at the time, so I'll give Google credit for duping me.  I'll simply jump into my time machine, go ahead an hour, and pretend I was never duped.

What level of "Butt" do you rank your serving?
By James on 3/24/2008 1:30 PM

In terms of vague measurements we use in daily conversation, I got to wondering what the actual hierarchy should be for the following.  What is bigger in terms of size – a Boatload, a Buttload, an Assload, or a Shitload?

Boatload – This signifies a large measurement as in “I had a boatload of fries at lunch”.

&nbs ...
