If it's not about hockey or baseball, chances are it won't be covered when I talk about sports.

For All You Packers Fans
By James on 1/21/2008 9:27 AM

Since you gave us Bears fans such grief this year, consider this.

At least the Bears got to the Super Bowl before losing to a Manning!  And at least we lost to a legitimate Manning, not the "semi-stupid, grass in his teeth, aw shucks, what's this indoor plumbing thing, Poppy?" Manning.

Teddy Bear Toss victim
By James on 1/14/2008 12:24 PM

Saturday’s Gwinnett Gladiators game included their annual Teddy Bear Toss.  The previous four years I have been in the penalty box which allows me the ability to get close to the glass behind me to avoid the onslaught of teddy bears being tossed onto the ice after the Gladiators first goal.  This year we were shorthanded for staff for that game so I was the Penalty Timekeeper (this will make sense in a minute, I swear).  The penalty timekeeper sits directly at center ice (between the two penalty boxes) and is the one who talks to the referee on the ice through the ho ...

Riots! Mayhem! Violence! Russian Hockey!
By James on 1/10/2008 10:28 AM

This is the first time I’ve embedded a video on this blog but I absolutely had to include this insane riot inside an arena at a Russian hockey game this week.  Not only are flares deployed, people are being tossed down rows of aisles.  Look for the guy making an insane “Curly from Three Stooges” gesture with his face and hands.  For you Red Wings fans, note the short footage of Barry Smith, former assistant coach and now head coach of the team in

Winter Classic 2008
By James on 12/31/2007 10:40 AM
I have avoided talking about hockey all year on this blog since it tends to turn people off but I figured what will be on TV tomorrow might entice the casual sports fan to check out NBC at 1 PM.  For those of you utterly bored with football, or for those who like football but are tired of all the insignificant bowl games going on at this time of year, you might want to check out what the NHL is doing.  The Buffalo Sabres are hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins OUTSIDE at Ralph Wilson Stadium where the Bills normally play.

After the smashing success of the NHL’s first outdoor venture a few years ago in Edmonton, it looks like the NHL will be hosting these possibly once a year or every ...

Who is that unmasked Canadian?
By James on 12/10/2007 9:58 AM

Dear Atlanta Thrashers Marketing Department,

I know that since the ownership group also known as the Atlanta Spirit also owns the Hawks, the Thrashers always take a back seat in terms of priority.  Heck, dying of thirst seems to be a higher priority than televising your product on a channel that appears to be stuck in a snowstorm.  And I know that since we live in the

Blood and Brawls
By James on 10/29/2007 9:40 AM

For those of you new to the site, during the hockey season I volunteer as an ECHL Off Ice Official for the Gwinnett Gladiators games ('AA' affiliate of the Thrashers).  Most of the time I work in the home penalty box.  In the five years I’ve been doing this, I’ve seen my share of nuttiness, although multi-player brawls are still the exception and not the rule.  Last night’s game was one of those where the game started out normal and then turned nasty near the end.

Fields of yesteryear's dreams
By James on 9/4/2007 9:39 AM

We have quite a pretty park by our house where Ally plays.  There’s a pool, 5 tennis courts, a playground, a creek, 2 baseball/soccer fields (for small kids) and a pavilion to host parties.  The city of Decatur keeps it in pretty good shape but there is one part of it that has kind of made me sad this year.  The one lower baseball field must not have been used by any youth leagues this year because the infield is filling up with grass quickly.

Out of touch with reality
By James on 8/31/2007 9:35 AM

This could simply be a case where the disconnect between generations is now becoming more pronounced for me but I’ve come to the realization of a few things regarding pro sports.  Having grown up a sports fanatic, I’ve really become more of a casual observer and have cooled to just about every sport but hockey as of late.  Moreso than any other era, I think the modern day athlete is completely out of touch with the average fan.  A huge factor in this are the stratospheric salaries being paid these guys to play a game.  As a proponent of capitalism, I have no problem with someone making an assload of money if someone is willing to pay them.< ...

Defending Barry?!?!?!
By James on 7/20/2007 10:21 AM

This will probably be my most unpopular post ever, especially considering how everyone feels about Barry Bonds (myself included).  I haven’t read the book Game of Shadows yet and had I read it, I might not be writing this, but it’s time for people to get over Barry Bonds breaking the home run record.

Making the game better
By James on 7/9/2007 11:48 AM

Since this is the All Star week for baseball, I thought I’d throw out a few suggestions to tweak the Grand Old Game.  With the exception of the Designated Hitter, I’m a traditionalist but there should be less stupid scoreboard crap and more personable entertainment like the sausage races they have in Milwaukee and the pierogi one in Pittsburgh.  Obviously you would make ...
