Random bouts of mass hysteria and overhyped mundane events

Final thoughts on Las Vegas
By James on 9/25/2006 4:12 PM

Now that I’ve had a week to mull over my first trip to Las Vegas, a few things come to mind.  One thing is for sure – unless you absolutely hated the place, you HAVE to go back at least for a second time.  With so many places bombarding you all at once, the first trip really is an orientation.  Trying to digest everything you see is simply too much.

I was there from Thursday evening to Sunday morning which was probably one day too long for a newbie, especially someone who doesn’t gamble.  ...

Atlanta, by way of Milwaukee and Chicago
By James on 9/19/2006 12:17 PM

I’m still trying to gather my Vegas thoughts, so those should be online later this week.  In the meantime, I figured I’d go out of chronological order and talk about my arduous flight back from Vegas.  By no means is this going to be a rant against airlines.  Weather-related issues are beyond anyone’s control.  This is simply a recap of my day’s events on Sunday coming back from Vegas.

Normally I don’t use connecting flights.  Ever.  Unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Regrouping
By James on 9/18/2006 10:05 AM
Hopefully I'll have something in writing tomorrow.  I'm still recouping from a 12-hour, 3-city, lost luggage, running through O'Hare, no food ordeal yesterday.

ATL-LAS
By James on 9/14/2006 8:22 AM

Today I leave for Vegas for the first time.

Pray for my soul.

The plan, for now, is to return to Atlanta on Sunday night at least semi-clothed and half my dignity still intact.

I'm either gonna love or hate this place.  Stay tuned.

When are you Cumming for your appointment?
By James on 9/6/2006 11:13 AM

On Friday, I noticed in my Palm that I had a Tuesday appointment for my yearly checkup with my pulmonologist, thanks to Atlanta's ass-tastic air that gives me the gift of asthma.  Since I just started my new job this month, the last thing I wanted to do is take extra time off before I feel comfortable that my boss is comfortable with me taking time off.  Anyway, I didn't remember to postpone the appointment until Friday afternoon.  By that time the office had already closed and it redirected me to an answering service.  Of course, with these answering services, they only want you to leave a message if it's an emergency.

A lot of doctors and dentists will charge you for a full visit if you don't give 24 hours notice.  So here I am on a Friday before a 3-day holiday weekend and I have no way to leave a simple voice message with the office to give my notice.&nbs ...

Lost In Translation
By James on 9/1/2006 2:59 PM

I love the online translator sites like the one at dictionary.com because it’s fun to sometimes find out what someone is saying or has posted online.  It can also be amusing to use when you want to “mix it up” a little bit and make it seems as though you were bi/trilingual.  Of course, there are not many opportunities to use an English-to-Mandarin translation but it’s still fun to make people wonder what the hell you just typed.

Sometimes the fun and games can backfire on you in humorous ways.  A friend had a party that he sent Evites for and I replied as a “Yes” with the following comment in Spanish - "Sí, ésos so ...

Beer, phones, and true reality TV
By James on 8/30/2006 10:33 AM

I’m all over the place today.  There is no theme today, only utterly haphazard slapdashery.

I’ve noticed another side effect of maturing (some call it aging).  In addition to preferring to drink less beer but better quality, there’s another overriding factor in limiting my drink intake.  Obviously the threat of a hangover is a great deterrent but an even larger factor now is watching my calorie count.  How flippin’ lame is that?  While I refuse to cut beer out of my life yet don’t want to get the dreaded beer gut, compromises mus ...
