Georgia has an odd practice of naming roads and highways after people who are still alive. While this might be OK when naming a road after, say, ex-presidents (Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Ronald Reagan Parkway come to mind), it becomes dicier when you name a road after a defrocked bishop of a church. Heck, they’ve even named a part of I-285 Cynthia McKinney Highway and we all know how it’s great to recognize someone so rational and evenhanded as her. I don’t care what side of the political spectrum you sit on; naming a portion of a highway after her is akin to Louisiana naming a portion of I-10 after David Duke.
Were I someone famous, I really don’t think I’d want a road or building named after me; at least not while alive. I understand it’s other people who nominate your name but there’s still some ego involved in saying “yes” to something like that.
What got me to thinking about this is what I believe ...

If there is a bigger buzzkill day than December 26th, I’d like to know what it is. All the anticipation is gone, the kids have been overwhelmed with the crazy goings on for a month, the holiday lights aren’t as fun to turn on, and you realize that you still have to eat all those cookies and candy before you can even consider getting back to a saner diet.
Christmas actually went pretty well, minus the very odd feeling of hearing thunder on Christmas. Look, I know that there wasn’t snow when this Jesus kid was born and he wasn’t born on the pagan holiday of December 25, but there’s something to be said for a white Christmas to get you into the holiday mood. There were at least 50/50 odds when I was growing up in Detroit that we would have a white Christmas. I do recall one Christmas where I was crestfallen because it was 63 degrees and rainy. I couldn’t go outside to try out my new NFL football (with the Pete Roz ...

'Q.A.ing' Santa's cookies |

It’s always interesting to get a child’s take on things, especially when it comes to mythical entities like Santa. In addition to her not wanting to be near Santa and yelling out her requests (see yesterday’s post), she also freaked out last Christmas Eve about Santa being in our house. She was so distraught about a stranger being in our house and she wouldn’t sleep until I promised her that I would leave Santa a note telling him to please leave the gifts on the front porch and I would bring them in myself and put them under the tree. Problem solved.
This year, as a 4 year old, she is much braver and is fine with Santa coming into the house. The nice thing about this is that it allowed her to leave cookies for Santa (chocolate chip, “Santa’s” favorite). What made this amusing is that prior to setting some on a plate, she wanted to check to make sure the cookies were OK for Santa. She told Megan that s ...

Prior to our holiday party for work which was on the first Saturday in December, I had what can only be described as the Best Work Assignment Ever. For those of you that know me, it should come as no surprise that I, along with another coworker who is also a beer enthusiast, was selected to help purchase GOOD BEER for the party! The guy in charge of making sure our office transitions smoothly with the company that bought us also happens to share a love of good beer and it was his orders that I was following.
Since we were having it at a coworker’s (very nice) house, the money that was saved by not renting a place got added to our food and alcohol budget! We were given orders to spend $250 on beer alone and to purchase as little of BudMillerCoors as possible. “Sir, yes Sir!”
I can only describe th ...

I like to think that I am aware of my surroundings most of the time. When in a crowded area like a mall, I try to not be the bottleneck point if it all possible. Part of being aware is paying attention to what is in front of you.
As I was exiting the main portion of the mall into the Nordstrom’s store where my car was parked nearest to, I averted my eyes to their holiday display, as I was curious what they would put up since ...

Disney might have the copyright on “It’s A Small World” lyrics but sometimes this phrase really comes to life for us at certain times in our life. I’ve had several of these moments at particular times but two have stuck out enough where I just shake my head at the sheer coincidence at chance interaction. This second occurrence happened this past Saturday.
The first time I had a “Wow, what a small world” moment was ba ...

I had an “oh shit” moment last night but thankfully was relieved to find out it was a false scare. Last week we decided to get some additional lights to put on our bushes outdoors for the holiday season and I quickly scanned the shelves of boxes at Kroger and took one that looked like it would do the trick. I promised Ally she would be able to help me hang the lights when we were ready to this week.
Last night I was looking a ...

A graveyard of appliances |

It’s amazing how much an appliance becomes part of your life yet you have no idea how much you miss it until it’s gone or broken. Our microwave broke down last month and the time from when it died to the time we had a new one installed was the longest week on earth. The only thing I can compare it to is how you take swallowing for granted until you actually get a sore throat. With every swallow and gulp during that time, you’re reminded how often that bodily function is carried out each day. You do everything you can to get your throat back to its normal state so it doesn’t feel like you’re trying to swallow razor blades. ...
