Doughnuts in beer?
By James on 1/31/2008 10:59 AM

This was an uncharacteristically busy weekend for me.  Saturday I was at the Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting, an annual event I try not to miss.  Sunday was the NHL All Star Game here in Atlanta which has been a long time coming.  The All Star Game was initially awarded to the city for the 2004 season but that wound up being the season that was cancelled due to the lockout.  I’ll post photos later this week for those of you interested.

Spamalot
By James on 1/29/2008 10:19 AM

Spam is so blatant most of the time but every once in a while one catches my eye for whatever reason.  I got a typical one this morning with the subject “Your morttgage offers” that slipped past the spam filters and weaseled its way to my inbox.  The misspelling of the subject line alone means that a) they’re misspelling on purpose to avoid a filter on spam buzzwords like “mortgage” or b) it’s originating in a country that doesn’t use English as their primary language.

The only time Windows is truly secure
By James on 1/23/2008 10:56 AM

If there was ever was an indicator I made the Right Choice when it came to switching to a Mac and worshipping at the Altar of Steve, my faith in Apple ratcheted up several notches last night as I helped my mother-in-law get her new laptop set up.  Obviously all Windows-based PCs come with Vista now and while I could go on a rant about why Vista is truly a misstep by Microsoft for so many reasons, I don't want to bore the non- ...

Assorted household-related miscellany
By James on 1/22/2008 3:22 PM

You know you’re a dad when, during your lunch break, you head to Target (thankfully within walking distance of the new office) and fill up your cart with as much formula (a special kind for Katie's digestion issues that costs more per ounce than black market uranium) and Stage 1 baby food that your arms can carry.  Even five short years ago my same arms would have been carrying bags of snacks and other assorted goodies for our childless household at the time.  Instead of bags of CDs and DVDs and various electronic goodies, they’ve morphed into bags of diapers, tubes of Desitin, and assorted other creams/ointments/balms/salves used to treat wounds/dry skin/rashes/dirty clothes and whatnot.

Storm of the Century
By James on 1/17/2008 10:05 AM

We had about an inch left of milk in the gallon jug as of last night but I didn’t make my normal run to the grocery store to get more.  Why would I let a household staple run so dangerously low, you ask?  Because I wanted no part of what I knew would be a madhouse rush on all things dairy, bread and water since we were about to get some snow flurries totaling less than an inch.

Shipping to the Danger Zone
By James on 1/9/2008 6:03 PM

Last week I noticed a new email footer from a buddy who works for a company based in Philadelphia that sells pipe fittings.  I went to their site and the same disclaimer is on several of its pages.

Material quoted and or sold by Pennsylvania Machine Works, Inc is not to be shipped ...

As the crow flies?!
By James on 1/8/2008 12:29 PM

While I’m in the same vicinity of the old work office building, my route home has been altered slightly.  If you follow what most online maps tell you to (which actually synchs up to the most logical route involving the highways and main roads), you would take these turns.

Moving in
By James on 1/7/2008 1:50 PM

Not much time to write today since we are in the midst of moving-in insanity at our new office.  I’m quite pleased to find out there’s even more places to eat within walking distance.  In lieu of words today, I leave you with two angles of what appears to be a disturbing statue outside the building.  There are several scattered throughout the property, but this one out front is a head-scratcher.  Am I the only one who sees this pose and thinks “Man Being Shot While Fleeing From Police”?

Goodbye, my tall friend
By James on 1/4/2008 11:48 AM

GetOut.jpg

Today is our last day in the “Queen” building (5 Concourse Parkway) as we move into a smaller (and cheaper) building next week.  For those of you in Atlanta, I’ll now be just north of Perimeter Mall instead of just west of it.  While it’s technically closer to home, mall traffic will probably make it a slightly longer drive.

In the land of lepers, the one-armed man is king
By James on 12/28/2007 9:51 AM
Georgia has an odd practice of naming roads and highways after people who are still alive.  While this might be OK when naming a road after, say, ex-presidents (Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Ronald Reagan Parkway come to mind), it becomes dicier when you name a road after a defrocked bishop of a church.  Heck, they’ve even named a part of I-285 Cynthia McKinney Highway and we all know how it’s great to recognize someone so rational and evenhanded as her.  I don’t care what side of the political spectrum you sit on; naming a portion of a highway after her is akin to Louisiana naming a portion of I-10 after David Duke.

Were I someone famous, I really don’t think I’d want a road or building named after me; at least not while alive.  I understand it’s other people who nominate your name but there’s still some ego involved in saying “yes” to something like that.

What got me to thinking about this is what I believe ...
