Random bouts of mass hysteria and overhyped mundane events

I need a group opinion
By James on 2/26/2008 2:29 PM

This is s time-sensitive post which is why I have two entries today.  As I’ve expressed my love for Trader Joe’s in the past, I had a disturbing experience today while eating a sandwich bought from their Midtown location yesterday.  With 3 bites left to go in my Grilled Steak with Onion sandwich, I bit down on something hard.  I didn’t think much about it as I assumed it was a stray piece of bone from the meat or something like that.

Nature's Emergency Broadcast System
By James on 2/26/2008 10:23 AM

Remember when that tsunami claimed over a hundred thousand lives the other year yet there were no animal corpses to be seen?  I was fascinated by that story, cementing the fact that animals do have a "sixth sense" or whatever you want to call it when it comes to external danger.

I was woken up this morning (pre-dawn) by the loud chirping of a bird.  During the warmer months, that’s the norm around our house a ...

Saturday night action!
By James on 2/25/2008 9:23 PM

In no way is today’s post a complaint or whiny entry.  This is simply a statement of the facts of this past weekend.  In what was to be a small break from our insane schedule the past few months (Megan is wrapping up her Master’s degree so there are zero days off from either work or clinical or class – Saturdays and Sundays are just another day for the near future), my sister-in-law was to take the girls for a sleepover.  As fate would have it, she came down with the flu on Thursday night and is still barely able to get out of bed so our planned, rare Saturday night off never came to pass.  Anyone who is a parent knows this is standard operating procedure – the best plaid plans are waylaid 50% of the time du ...

Old? Check. Senile? Check. Depressed now? Check.
By James on 2/21/2008 10:01 AM

Sometimes forwarded joke emails hit a bit too close to home.  I got one from a friend the other day and it was your standard “You know you’re old when…”  As I finished the list of 25, I realized “Holy mackerel, even though I’m laughing at these because I can relate, am I now becoming so lame that these are almost all things that are true to us 30-something-plussers?”

Let’s go down the list that was sent to me and you can make a ...

Go left! Go left! Go left!
By James on 2/20/2008 12:08 PM

Maybe it’s human nature based on instinct from things like riding a bicycle, but do you ever catch yourself leaning much farther than you have to when making a turn in your car?  Yes, there is some residual inertia you have to fight, most of it determined by the speed at which you’re making the turn, but I think we all tend to overcompensate, especially when making a left hand turn.

I didn’t really think much about this until one day, as I’m in a left turn lane and watching people turn l ...

Mini Stonehenge

One of my favorite sites I read daily is a New Hampshire based blog called Atlantic Avenue.  Amy Kane is a terrific writer and a fantastic photographer to boot.  Something she

Stayin' Awake
By James on 2/1/2008 10:24 AM

Probably the only thing I don’t like about our new office is that it’s a dark cavern compared to how many windows were in the previous building.  The main conference room could easily double its income potential for our landlords by using the corners of the room to grow mushrooms.  Even odder are the recessed canister lights that beam right down on you in this dark room, giving all the warmness of an interrogation room about to be used by Jack Bauer.

Doughnuts in beer?
By James on 1/31/2008 10:59 AM

This was an uncharacteristically busy weekend for me.  Saturday I was at the Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting, an annual event I try not to miss.  Sunday was the NHL All Star Game here in Atlanta which has been a long time coming.  The All Star Game was initially awarded to the city for the 2004 season but that wound up being the season that was cancelled due to the lockout.  I’ll post photos later this week for those of you interested.

Spamalot
By James on 1/29/2008 10:19 AM

Spam is so blatant most of the time but every once in a while one catches my eye for whatever reason.  I got a typical one this morning with the subject “Your morttgage offers” that slipped past the spam filters and weaseled its way to my inbox.  The misspelling of the subject line alone means that a) they’re misspelling on purpose to avoid a filter on spam buzzwords like “mortgage” or b) it’s originating in a country that doesn’t use English as their primary language.

The only time Windows is truly secure
By James on 1/23/2008 10:56 AM

If there was ever was an indicator I made the Right Choice when it came to switching to a Mac and worshipping at the Altar of Steve, my faith in Apple ratcheted up several notches last night as I helped my mother-in-law get her new laptop set up.  Obviously all Windows-based PCs come with Vista now and while I could go on a rant about why Vista is truly a misstep by Microsoft for so many reasons, I don't want to bore the non- ...
