Time for a double dose of pessimism

As someone who is passionate about environmental issues along with common “be good to your planet” sense, I am thrilled to see large retailers like Home Depot pushing the new types of light bulbs that last up to thirteen times longer than an incandescent bulb. Being also a pessimist at heart, I wonder what Home Depot’s “angle” is for long-term profits on this item. Yes, the initial cost of people paying slightly more for these bulbs will provide a nice padding of the bottom line for a few years as people switch over but what’s in it for them after that? After the initial purchase, where do they make the same kind of profit?
Here is a product that is an energy conserver which, in turn, is a budget helper for the consumer. It’s the proverbial “win-win” for the end user. I’m dying to know what large retailer’s plans are after the initial sales surge because at the surface it doesn’t make business sense. Why sell a product that will reduce your client base from buying that product long-term by at least tenfold? As much as corporate America pretends to be green (I see full page ads from gas companies in the newspaper every day perpetuating this lie), they’re in the business to make more green – as in dollars. Maybe they’ll make the money with other peripheral products but I’m very curious to know what their long term plans are.
**********
I’ve noticed a disturbing trend lately although it could be solely relegated to my local cable company and could even simply be my set-top boxes. The past 4 or 5 Amber Alerts have been completely useless. The message breaks into the regularly scheduled programming as it’s intended to do (it even interrupts you while watching something previously recorded on the DVR) but that’s where the effectiveness completely ends. The feeds have been extremely choppy and not only has the law enforcements audio message been completely indecipherable, the ticker tape feed of the description of the situation also has been chopped up, coming in and out of the signal, rendering the message useless.
So not only can you not hear what the situation is, you also can’t read it the scrolling message bar because the feed goes in and out constantly. As a parent, I’ve got no problem with my show being interrupted for a legitimate issue like this but if you’re going to inconvenience people, at least make sure the message is getting across. If I were a family member of an abducted child and saw that the message was impossible to understand, I’d lose my fucking mind. |

As someone who likes to do what they can for the environment and also likes to save a buck whenever possible I was excited when I first read about these fluorescent bulbs (I assume that's what you're referring to). So I have bought a few of these over the last 3-4 years. They do last forever, but the problem is they suck. They claim to have a certain number of lumens that are equal to say a 100W bulb. However there is no way they are as birhgt as they claim to be, they may light up the same area but the inentsity of the light just isn't there. Reading by a fluoirescent light is a good way to get eye strain. They are only good as area/backgornd lighting. Very dissapointing.
It makes sense for the big box stores to selll these as light bulbs aren't a big money maker for them anyway. So they are baiscally trading up to a higher profit sale. Then a few years down the road when the demand dwindles they will hammer the company selling them the bulbs to lower their prie or they'lll just stop selling them altogether. No big loss for th Home Depots of the world. The great thing about being Home Deopt, Menards, Wal Mart et al is your buying power is so great you can pick and choose what products you want to carry.
RE your Amber alert story: Here's something sorts related. We had a "Midwest special" storm comethrough here Saturday afternoon. It wasn't bad beforhand, a few sprinkles is all. Our of curiosity I turned on the weather channel to see what the temperature was. On that channel there is a crawl that we are under a tornado warning and that the tornado would be in the town just south of us in 10 minutes. This is odd because the warning sirens weren't going off anf the regular channels didn't have the crawl like they normally would. So the wife and kids go down in the basement with the weather radio, which also wasn't going off like it should. While I of course go out on the porch and try to get some high quality video on my Treo, and try to get the dumbass cat, who ran out when I opened the door, in the house. A nasty storm did then whip through (2 lightning strike fires in our town) but no tornado. It seems the radar indicated a todnadic cloud or something bnut there was not actual funnel cloud sited.
So I guess this was a "sort of" tornado warning. I'm guessing they're trying to be extra safe, but by crying wolf like this you're just going to have less people taking the warnings seriously, which could be more dangerous. C'mon weather geeks, get your shiat together already. |

I use CFLs all over the house with no problem at all; of course, we both have perfect vision and I dropped extra money on GE. The way the research is going today, in 5-10 years CFLs will be old news and we'll be using even-lower-power, even-longer-lasting LED-based bulbs anyway.
Switching just the basement (5 bulbs on one switch) and the recessed lighting in the kitchen (3 bulbs that used to be 120W each are now 19W each) has noticeably dropped our KWH usage.
Presumably, Home Depot is giving up on incandescents and pushing CFLs because that's what the manufacturer reps are pushing, and the manufacturers are going that way because governments are starting to discuss banning incandescents. Especially for the big manufacturers, the merchandisers have at least as much say as the retailers over how products are sold in the stores. |

| Keep your eyes on the legislation being introduced in the US that ban the incadescents and the profit story is a mute point. Will it actually happen, I don't know? The other lighting technology is the LED light bulb. They are currently for sale by speciallty retailers, but there are still mixed reactions to it. Like the CF, it needs to be brighter and have better coverage. Give it a year or two and LED's will be ready for mass consumption. |

Wow - Lightbulb talk....Aren't there any other topics down here at the bottom of the barrel?
Reminds me of a funny gag on the TV show Scrubs. The doctor is looking at an x-ray of a guys abdomen and there is a lightbulb in there. He says "well either this guy has a lightbulb in his ass or his colon just had a great idea." |

| Ahhh, sarcasm about lighbulbs from the guy that doesn't write 4-5 times a week and also doesn't have to pay for lightbulbs in his current living situation. ;) You should be praising me for finding 240 words to expand upon the issue!! |

Help me out here............Do I have the gist of today's blog right? Are they using Lightbulbs to do Amber Alerts? Is the Weather Channel now doing Amber Alerts? Is Erich is the Unabomber? Should I buy these bulbs and use them? |

| Don't sprain your shoulder patting yourself on the back there Jimmy boy...it was my clever and witty retort that generated the interest (well aside from Muuuuurph, KB, and JA3 who seem to have lightbulb fetishes) |

Hello, my name is Sylvia and I am an flourescent bulb user and have been for about 15 years. One tourchiere that has survied my various moves still has that one (of two) in it. I have no problem reading under their light...yes I do read things on paper in a comfy chair away from the PC.
Dear "Saints" (must be a misnomer): Yes, in Atlanta No (some unidenitifed state) No (still in jail somewhere with electricity) Yes. Be a good egg and save a few dollars in the long run.
Thank God I have this forum to seek out my common bond with like-minded people - you can't tell who is using them just by walking down the street - nice to have a safe place to talk bulbs...of light...Bless you James. (This is NOT a fetish!) |
