 Video iPod Minimize

Having had my video iPod for almost a year now, I’ve come to some conclusions about certain iTunes pricing practices.  First, the 99 cents per song marketing strategy was one of the better things to come to fruition for the consumer in the past decade.  Yes we could go on another tangent in how artists seems to get less money with this distribution method but that is more a fault of the crooked record companies and not because of the iTunes business model.

Second, the video iPod has come in handy for particular viewings of shows you might have missed recording on your DVR.  If you can’t wait until the DVD comes out, which is the case for shows that have a continuous plot line, and you can’t get the show via streaming online (for instance, viewing Lost on abc.com), this is the next best legal thing.

There are two snags to this though, although both aren’t deal breakers for me.  The first is the fact that the iPod video screen is very small still.  In fact I’m surprised Apple hasn’t introduced a widescreen iPod (like the Zune) where you can view a show sideways on your portable player, giving the full widescreen ration most shows are movies are shot on today.

The second stumbling block is the price for shows.  I’m confused as to why a 30 minute show costs the same as a 60 minute show.  Why should I pay $1.99 for a 22 minute comedy when for the same price I can download a 44 minute show?  I think maybe it should be $1.49 for a 30 minute show and $1.99 for an hourlong show.

On top of that, watching movies on an Ipod on a 3-inch screen simply isn’t an option yet, especially when they’re charging DVD prices for it.  I think for the current size of the video screen, the breaking point for a movie price is 5 or 6 dollars.  I’m not going to pay $14.99 for a movie on a 3” by 2” screen.

With that being said, the video iPod is still an incredible play toy to have.  To be able to have every song you own, along with your choice of TV shows and/or movies, all available in a package that fits in your hand is truly incredible.  This technology is only going to get better and I can’t wait.

Gotta love the iPod! Whenever I am taking a trip I download a couple episodes of the Office and watch them on the plane. Definitely shortens the flight.

Question: Is it possible (with or w/o a hack) to transfer TV shows from my DVR to a video iPod? If not, what about a Creative Zen or another video player? My Scientific Atlanta DVR has a front USB port, but the manual says it's for "future use"...

I have yet to buy tv shows or movies for my video iPod but I do subscribe to a bunch of video podcasts. Apple TV is a good option if you want to watch your iTunes video collection on your home tv. Granted that defeats the portability feature of the iPod.

Please, Erich, throw another "James is gay" comment into this blog entry where it would obviously not make sense to do so.

You can also download programs to convert your DVDs to the iPod formatt. If it weren't for the video iPod Andrea and I would kill each other on the flights to and from California...

First off, iPod phone --- they got your widescreen iPod right there.
In reference to J's question ... yes. It's possible. If you weren't using your cable company's DVR system. TIVO and Replay both have numerous hacks available that allow you to transfer shows from them to your iPod.
Now, having said that, I just found some good websites that show how to get the stuff off of a motorola dvr system (like that typically used by Comcast) using a firewire cable and some great freeware.

Meatball - you seem in the know for this, how about a mod for the directv dvr.
James is just mad his gay porn collection does not show up well on the video ipod. - Sorry, Erich is not on the ball today, that was my lame ass attempt to fill in for him.

James, if you are looking for something with a larger screen, there are other choices. Of course, this means carrying around another device:

- Archos 604 or 704 - download direct from your Tivo to this using some 3rd part software
- Pepper Pad 3 ( I have this, and its a great wifi device, among other fine attributes, www.pepper.com )
- I understand that TiVo has a deal with the Sony PSP to download direct from from one to the other. I don't have a PSP but I thought the partnership was interesting.

Ooops. This website gives a better overview: www.pepperpad.com

Sorry - I didn't know I had to continually remind you all of James' Gayness. I thought it was a given at this point. Seems kinda pointless, like constantly stating that the sky is blue or grass is green.....James is to Gay as Matt Flagg is to forehead.

OK, back from vacation and it's good to see the masses turn on each other.

Meatball, you bring up a good point and I should have made note of it in this entry, but the iPod Phone is a no-go for me for four reasons.
1 - I love my Blackberry and have no desire to switch.
2 - It will only be available via Cingular. We have T-Mobile and have a really good monthly plan.
3 - The price point ($500) will only entice the early adapters and Apple Phreaks until they bring that down to comparable phone rates.
4 - Make it an 80 GB IPod Phone and we can talk. Until the memory is comparable, that's also a deal breaker.

Wait a second. Did....did you just call me some kind of mass - like one that ought to be surgically removed? Harrumph!

The iPhone is just cool. The touchscreen does it for me.

The storage and carrier are deal breakers for me, though. Make it 80gb and add XM to it while you're at it....then I'll deal with having to switch to Cingular.
