I’m a bit baffled as to a certain category of spam that comes to my inbox.  Obviously there are the ones that pretend to be valid websites but you’re redirected to a sinister site.  Others are the result from being on a list from a web site you bought stuff from.  Some try to convince you that a Nigerian prince really does need your help, along with your bank account and routing number.  Some are links to good old fashioned porn.  Some want you to reply to the address so it knows that email account is used and then they bombard you with more spam.

But what about the spam that doesn’t have a selling point or scam or link?  What is the purpose?  Does anyone know the reason behind emails full of gibberish like the one I’ve included below?  Is it also a phishing ploy where they want you to reply to tell them to take you off their list and then they’ll bomb you with more email?  The syntax in these emails are obviously from those word-generating programs that fill up text for you when testing word and character limits for software applications.

Aren't there some e-mail programs that can tell you if your message has been read? Perhaps there is some variation on this that the spammers can use to find valid e-mails. You know maybe a report gets generated and sent to them showing only the e-mail adresses where the mail was opened or received?

Just a guess.

They track it and verify it's a used address for further sale or spamming. I never open any of them, the subject is also gibberish.

That's exactly how I sound when I've had too much vodka.

A lot of the gibberish text in spam is there to confuse anti-spam systems. Some will actually assume that a sufficiently long email is valid regardless of what it finds inside; others will decide that even if the word "cialis" is in there, enough of the rest of the email is OK to let through.

If nothing was stripped out or hidden in this one, then yeah, it's just testing to see if it gets a bounce message. No bounce, it's valid, and they can sell/spam it as a "verified good" address...
