Defending Barry?!?!?! Minimize

This will probably be my most unpopular post ever, especially considering how everyone feels about Barry Bonds (myself included). I haven’t read the book Game of Shadows yet and had I read it, I might not be writing this, but it’s time for people to get over Barry Bonds breaking the home run record.

Let’s get the unpleasantries out of the way. Barry Bonds is a prick. He’s got a bristly personality, is dismissive of the press and can be antagonistic at times. He’s arrogant and tends to throw out the race card every once in a while too. He’s dismissive of others and seems to (at least publicly) revel in the hatred he gets when he’s on the road. He takes up THREE lockers in his home clubhouse and has a lot of perks no other major leaguer even comes close to having. His body has increased in size that can only be the result of hormones, seeing that he bulked up after the age of 35, a time when the human body begins to deteriorate. His head has increased by an even greater percentage than the rest of his body, thus giving his enemies (i.e. everyone outside of San Francisco) more ammunition for their steroid accusations. His trainer is in jail for refusing to testify and that really casts a huge shadow on his legacy.

With all that being said, as far as we know, unless there’s some hidden test result Major League Baseball hasn’t released or the grand jury that is investigating him hasn’t pursued publicly, he has never tested positive under MLB’s set of standardized drug tests. Yes, we all might hate him for his aloofness and maybe we’re all a little stir crazy that he hasn’t been busted before, but if a man has never been convicted we don’t have a leg to stand on.

While most of us might not like Barry and what he represents, this should make no difference to the Owner Lackey, I mean, Commissioner of Baseball. All this steroid shit happened on King Bud’s watch and he simply is reaping what he sows. For him to hem and haw about whether or not he’ll be in attendance when the record is tied/broken shows how little a spine this man actually has. Bowie Kuhn was a prick for not being there when Hank Aaron initially broke the record and it looks like Bud, a man who I might actually have less respect for than Bonds, will also make an error in judgment by hiding in Milwaukee in whatever crypt he normally spends his nights in. I don’t care if Bud is a close friend of Hank Aaron. The man has a title and he needs to be in attendance for all notable baseball events, much less the breaking of the sport’s most hallowed record. Besides, Bonds’ record will be broken in 10-15 years due to the fact that ballplayers are still getting bigger and the parks are getting smaller.

I do think that the next homer Barry hits, if it happens this weekend in Milwaukee, he will be benched to ensure he ties and breaks it in San Francisco. I honestly don’t want to see the ugly scene that will ensue if he ties or breaks the record on the road. Would I love to see Barry break the record in front of Bud’s hometown crowd? Yes, of course. But I don’t want to see a man be potentially harmed by a few crazies in a crowd simply because he broke a sports record.

It reminds me of when I was really hardcore into sports as a kid and I wanted Pete Rose dead. Why? Well, he was about to become the all time leader in hits, surpassing Ty Cobb. Being a Detroit Tigers fan, I didn’t want anyone breaking a record held by a Tiger. Maybe it was because I lived in a city where violence was the norm, but I really wanted Pete Rose killed, preferably in front of a large audience. It was a dark thought for a young kid but I didn’t care. Of course I wasn’t able to carry out the dastardly deed but that was only because I lived in an American League city and the Reds never came to Detroit since this was in the pre-interleague play era.

What ugly scene if he hits it in Milwaukee? Fans killing each other for the ball (?) - that will happen wherever it is hit. Trust me on that, you should've seen the ugly scrum at the end of our row for the 600 HR ball. Faint of heart and of first aid/stitches need not apply. Again - who gives a sh-- about his locker room closet? WTF is it with the concern for how his clothing his hanging when he is the ONLY and the greatest PLAYER on this team for the last ten years in a row - the most accomplished by far of any who put their shoes into any locker space in Pac Bell. Never complained about by his own (rotating musical lockers and) teammates... vilified for ignoring the press - so f'in' what. His major league playing father trained him how to deal with the press as he was growing up and he hasn't changed over the years.

He's never been my favorite, but who really cares if he is an asshole? Did you hear that the Grand Jury testimony was leaked by one of the attorneys in the proceedings (?) - the one that accused the gov't of leaking the transcripts of the case did it his own self. He is going to jail. Good.

One thing that I do question is the obsession with BB and the hall pass for admitted user Jason (hell-O it all started in Big Mac's Oakland locker room) Giambi. And what of Gary Sheffield? The hypocrites abound. At least the man was never caught playing a Major League game with a CORKED bat. :^) looosers come in all forms, don't they?! The game is bigger than all of them put together.

<br<>br<>br<>br>
It truly doesn't matter where, there will be ugliness and security. Oh and P.S. Idiot "Bud" Selig who should stand up in and for the league he fashioned and take it (the reality of his service) like a man would. Not likely, the person accepts a freaking tie game and perverts baseball's World Series as a solution. We don't care if he is there or in his grave, mush mouth with a sporadic 'principled' position...

No comments on BB cheating on his first wife? The lawsuits over the contested yet signed with her personal attorney present pre-nuptial with his ex? I'm faintly surprised - Book of A-holes was made with illegally obtained testimony. The justice system is also bigger than all the looosers combined.

. A-Rod will break the record soon enough.

First of all I'm amazed at how little I really care about the whole thing. I agree with you though for the most part. Although if I were Bud Selig I wouldn't want to be following ANYONE around waiting for them to hit a long one. That was Kuhn's defense and I think it's acceptable. The problem is you don't know when he'll break it. What if Bonds was sitting at 755 heading into Chicago? Selig would have sat through 3 games for nothing. While I'm not his biggest fan I hope he has something to do that is more important than following this guy around. Bonds just went 0 for 21, what's to say he won't do something similar when he's tied for the record? Also who's to say he doesn't hit 3 tonight for that matter?

As far as whether he deserves the record, you bet he does. It's naive to think that none of the pitchers he hit dingers off weren't juicing. Everyone focuses on Bonds, Sosa, McGwire and the other sluggers. Meanwhile Roger Clemens makes an amazing comeback from a devastating arm injury in the same time period, continues to pitch into his mid 40s and no one says a thing. Look at pictures of Clemens pre-1995 and now. He bulked up quite a bit in his mid 30s also. Players have been using every cheat they can think of since they first were paid. How do we know something wasn't going on with Babe Ruth? Fat guy hits more HRs than entire teams? Looks suspicious to me.

Funny you mentioned Cobb. He may be the one Hall of Famer who was a bigger prick than Bonds. He was also universally disliked.

By "ugly scene" I meant people pelting him with objects and/or a crazy running onto the field and physically assaulting him.

I think it would be poetic Justice if he gets to within one HR, then Selig/The Feds indict him and he never gets to hit HR 755. Forever going through history 1 HR short.

Re: More Barry?! By Syl on 7/21/2007 2:16 PM
There is additional security for every game on BB now, I don't think they'll allow an ugly onfield scene for the event. You can't stop people throwing stuff on the field but there are two more cops at every other tunnel entrance in Pac Bell recently. They have their ballpark visual deterents in place. He's getting the kind of (death, etc.) threats that they won't make public.<><><><><><><><><> Indict him for what, exactly? Something that has other people actually admitting use and they themselves are still without indictment?<><><><<><> Folks have said - and I sure don't know - nearly the same things about Gagne in LA as they have said about Clemens. <><><><><><> BB could stop and be one run short but he really is less involved than when he was breaking the more meaningful to him records held by his Godfather (Willie Mays). He's no doubt influenced but aware that each game could be his last - his body is not infallable. He says the ball changing does get his attention while he waits to go to bat. He's been in similar places before with 600/660/700 and 715...<><><><><><>Also in an interview (yes, he gave a half hour interview to Krukow and Kuiper, Giants announcers) - as a personal historian of the game he feels that records are to be celebrated both when they are made and when they are broken. Barry said he won't need an invitation to attend - he will be there in the front row when A-Rod breaks his HR record, even if it stops "now" at 749. Which of course, it didin't.

The Indictment would be for Tax evasion - just like they got Al Capone - it won't have anything to do w/ roids. You are such a homer Syl ;)

And Pete Rose is still not in the Hall of Fame?

Suuu-ure, but at least I'm a Giants-loyal homer. Doh?!
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
That is correct, Saints Coming man.
