Sweetwater Brewing, the local irreverent brewers who have brought us beers with such naughty names as Summer Hummer, Dubbel D’s, Happy Ending, and 420 Pale Ale, finally released a limited amount of a new barleywine they call Donkey Punch. For those of you not aware of the unspeakable act that references, I’ll let you search on wikipedia on your own to see why this is a rather saucy name.
The cameraphone shot below isn’t that great so I will give the description they have on the label.
The biggest farm animal to come out of the Sweetwater barn! We bucked up and threw everything, including the kitchen sink, into this jackass concoction. At 10% ABV and over 90 IBU’s, you’ll know it when it hits you in the back of the head!
Pucker Up!
Wow, I’m quite surprised the label made it past the regulatory board that approves all food and drink labels in the state. Since the actual Sweetwater mascot, a salmon, is on this label like it is all their other beers, they probably had an easier time getting the smaller icon of a donkey (lower right) on the label.
The only issue I have with it is that the beer is not a barelywine by any stretch of the imagination. It’s a hop bomb and tastes like a Double IPA (or IIPA). It’s truly a great tasting beer and one that needs to be sipped with caution, as that 10% alcohol will creep up behind you and punch you.
