This might seem like Plate Overkill Week, but I simply couldn’t let this one go unmentioned. Now, I know every state has specialty plates that range from environmental themes to education to specific professions and also schools. Sometimes you’ll have a headscratcher such as how the heck Auburn alumni got a Georgia commemorative plate created here. That’s akin to having Michigan approve an Ohio State alumni license plate. I’m not sure how Auburn pulled that one off but kudos to them.

Anyway, I’ve seen many states do the Wildlife theme for those outdoors enthusiasts. Heck, Louisiana’s tagline is “Sportsman’s Paradise”. But the one I saw for South Carolina yesterday simply blows me away. This isn’t even a southern stereotype thing; rather it encompasses anyone who might have one of those Big Mouth Billy Bass contraptions mounted on your wall or bumper stickers that proclaim “Born To Fish, Forced To Work” or “Women Love Me, Fish Fear Me”.

The question is, how in the heck did South Carolina approve a “Gone Fishin’” plate? As you can see, the "Gone Fishin'" motto is on top, a fish is shown in the background and "South Carolina" is at the bottom. Do they also have "Female Body Inspector" plates with the naked lady silhouette you see on trucker mudflaps? Way to stay classy, South Carolina.

Now I know what to get my parents for Christmas! Get rid of those boring ol' SC plates they have now!

I don't think the Palmetto State's plates are boring! I love SC- South Carolina's motto is still what is has been for many years- "Smiling Faces, Beautiful Places"- Just like "Georgia on my Mind"- This particular person loves fishing- James thinks this person is a redneck because James is a city boy from Detroit- Just like my friends and my cousins from New York City- they consider those of us who grew up in the suburbs "Rednecks!"

SC's regular plate is quite nice -- no argument there. But you can't let the Bass Pro Shops industry deem what goes on a plate. :) As for Georgia, I'm waiting for the "www.Georgia.gov on my Mind" plates to eventually come out, incorporating a motto and advertising plug.

Okay ... so here's what I remember for the college plates in GA (since I've got a Ga Tech one on one vehicle and a U(sic)GA one on another). Basically, as long as 500 people request the plate, they'll make it. So as long as 500 people in GA requested the Auburn plate ... that's why they made it. I guess if 500 people request a University of Michigan plate they'd do that too ...

That's the way they do it here in VA as well- people petition to have plates- so I would think people petition to have "Gone Fishin'" plates-

Looks like the Bait Shop lobbying effort is alive and well in SC!!!!

God bless free markets and small business;)

Not to mention the additional revenue created from the plates. I was proud to pay five extra dollars to have my "Great Lakes Splendor" plates while living in MI (which were placed on my Chevy Cavalier, after having received many dirty looks for arriving in MI with my Toyota, so I ended up selling it) I fact, here in Va, some of those plates, such as "Keep the Lights Shining," have annual fees charged during the lifetime of the plate- the fees pay for maintenance funds of the lighthouses, etc. indeed for the public good! Great example of good capitalism:)

I also came to mention Virginia, where I was pretty freaked out the first time I saw plates from midwest schools like Notre Dame, Ohio State and Penn State. All they're missing is a Michigan plate, and we would have a supportable theory that the obnoxiousness of the fan base determines which out of state schools end up with plates.

Most of VA's other college plates, like the military academies, ACC schools, Villanova and the Carolina schools at least made sense when I first saw them. Only surprise on the page I linked is what wasn't there -- no AF Academy plate in Virginia...

(I was being sarcastic about the plates they have now being boring while the fish ones are not. I am not a fan of the fish plate)

To be fair, it says "fishing", not "fishin", so it's not quite as far off the goober charts as you infer, but I agree with your point. Fish plates should be at Red Lobster and not on cars. On a more practical note, though I don't begrudge anyone a vanity/special interest plate, I'm surprised law enforcement agencies don't raise concerns. You used to be able to see a car's plate and have a good idea immediately the state of origin. Now there's probably a 3-ring binder they have to go through to call in a tag on a car they're chasin', I mean chasing.

General, I stand corrected about the full name and not the abbreviation. I also agree that I do miss the days when each state had one plate - those specialty plates are hard to identify with those backgrounds. I can't imagine a cop trying to actually read them while in pursuit.

We have one with a whale tail in the air over the ocean. You know, a real whale's tail, not one of those thong 'bleacher view' ones...

Well, VA now leads the nation with vanity plates owners!
