For those of you new to the site, during the hockey season I volunteer as an ECHL Off Ice Official for the Gwinnett Gladiators games ('AA' affiliate of the Thrashers). Most of the time I work in the home penalty box. In the five years I’ve been doing this, I’ve seen my share of nuttiness, although multi-player brawls are still the exception and not the rule. Last night’s game was one of those where the game started out normal and then turned nasty near the end. For the first time that I can recall, the brouhaha at the end included SEVEN Game Misconduct penalties for three players! Two guys got into a scrum in front of the Reading bench and then, after exchanging additional pleasantries, a player from Reading jumped the bench to go after a Gladiator on the ice. The ensuing melee involved the linesmen being stuck in a Fists of Fury Sandwich.
Here is part of the box score from the end of the period.
3 - REA LaLonde, 18:26 - Fighting - Major (47.13), 5 min 3 - REA LaLonde, 18:26 - Game misconduct - Leaving The Players Bench (70.3), 10 min 3 - REA LaLonde, 18:26 - Game misconduct - Secondary altercation (47.6), 10 min 3 - REA MacMillan, 18:26 - Fighting - Major (47.13), 5 min 3 - REA MacMillan, 18:26 - Game misconduct - Abuse of Officials (40.5), 10 min 3 - REA MacMillan, 18:26 - Game misconduct - Leaving The Players Bench (70.3), 10 min 3 - REA Stefanishion, 18:26 - Roughing - minor (51.2), 2 min 3 - GWT Stoesz, 18:26 - Roughing - minor (51.2), 2 min 3 - GWT Stoesz, 18:26 - Fighting - Major (47.13), 5 min 3 - GWT Stoesz, 18:26 - Game misconduct - Fighting Other Than During Periods Of The Game (47.8), 10 min 3 - GWT Stoesz, 18:26 - Game misconduct - Secondary altercation (47.6), 10 min 3 - GWT Stoesz, 18:26 - Game misconduct - Abuse of Officials (40.5), 10 min
I also decided to take a cameraphone shot in my box of a towel that got bloodied from a player after his fight earlier in the game. He was gushing blood from a cut by his ear and it simply wouldn’t stop. Not included in the photo is also the ice bag he used which was also covered in blood. Old time hockey!

| James, is this the norm in the minors or have they changed the rules over the years to open up the scoring? What kind of fans are in Gwinnett? I assume there are many non-natives. Is that huge guy still playing there this year? |

| General, good question. To be honest, there really aren't many brawls. I'd say that, on average, you see a fight every 4-5 games. In the beginning of the season, it tends to be a bit chippy as players are trying to make a name for themselves and then it settles down. The rules changes have opened up scoring a bit although that can also be attributed to the fact that the goalies aren't quite as good as the AHL kids, although there are a few exceptions to this. As for the fans, it's an interesting mixture of transplants and native southerners who were hooked when they finally saw it live. The Gladiators have been in the top five of attendance (in a league of 30+ teams) in each of the five years they've been around. This is also impressive since it's only 'AA' hockey and it's one of the few ECHL markets where there is also an NHL team. |

| General, as for Lane Manson, the 6'9" behemoth you're referring to, he no longer is on the team. He went from being an assistant captain to being a "healthy scratch" for all but 2 playoff games the season before last. He played in Dayton last year and is in Wheeling this year. http://kirkpatrick.daktarbi.com/direct_link.cfm?bid=674DFCD0-4C27-4D74-8C544A793BA53236
|

| Busy night for James... What if they don't have time to serve the penalties and the game ends? All is forgiven?

Who does the corner cut work in the penalty box, anyway? |

| Syl, penalties do extend into overtime but if the game ends, their time in the box also expires. What is odd to me is that, say someone gets a penalty in OT but OT ends with both teams tied. Now it's Shootout time and even if they had time on the clock, they are still eligible to be one of the shooters. Now, this only applies if you don't have a game misconduct penalty and since the guys in this game had multiple game misconducts, they will be serving a suspension too. |
