Dear Atlanta Thrashers Marketing Department,

I know that since the ownership group also known as the Atlanta Spirit also owns the Hawks, the Thrashers always take a back seat in terms of priority.  Heck, dying of thirst seems to be a higher priority than televising your product on a channel that appears to be stuck in a snowstorm.  And I know that since we live in the Deep South where hockey isn’t a priority, I expect to see college football reruns on TV when an actual live NHL game is being played.

But when your marketing department sends out an email to all those on the Thrashers mailing list giving them the latest news updates regarding the team, it’s best to not only fact check what you are sending out, but to make sure all bases are covered.  Over the weekend your team acquired a big name veteran named Mark Recchi from the Pittsburgh Penguins.  Now, I know that the Penguins have a few veterans on their team and maybe all Canadians look alike to you, but if you send out an email to your fan base, MAKE SURE YOU ATTACH THE RIGHT PICTURE OF THE PERSON YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT.

Here’s the thing.  Gary Roberts is also another veteran player on the Penguins, but he looks nothing like Mark Recchi!!!  I noticed you corrected your mistake on the web site but the fact remains this kind of mistake wouldn’t happen in most NHL cities.

Here is the email I got from the Thrashers about Mark Recchi but with a Gary Roberts makeover.  If you want to see the real Mark Recchi, see the second picture.

The REAL Mark Recchi!!! (taken from the Thrashers web site this morning)

That's not Gary Roberts, that's child star Danny Bonnaduchi.<br>Stupit.

That's not Mark Recchi - that's Ray Liotta. Or Paul Walker... Recchi was a "healthy scratch" (and who doesn't enjoy a healthy scratch now and then?) that many games! I know I'm no hockey guru, but wasn't he all that and a bag of chips not long ago (Flyers?)? Wow, he musta got old fast. Or I did.

Many thanks to Kevin from http://melroserocks.blogspot.com/ (an unbelievably funny hockey blog) for linking me to his AOL Fanhouse entry yesterday. http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2007/12/10/thrashers-acquire-gary-roberts-but-only-in-their-dreams/

To add insult to injury, the same day Recchi was placed on waivers was also Mark Recchi bobblehead night at the Mellon Arena.

Ouch! Of course, I'm assuming that the Recchi bobbleheads didn't have Gary Robert's likeness and jersey number on it? :)

They can have Roberts too if they want.
