Prior to our holiday party for work which was on the first Saturday in December, I had what can only be described as the Best Work Assignment Ever. For those of you that know me, it should come as no surprise that I, along with another coworker who is also a beer enthusiast, was selected to help purchase GOOD BEER for the party! The guy in charge of making sure our office transitions smoothly with the company that bought us also happens to share a love of good beer and it was his orders that I was following.
Since we were having it at a coworker’s (very nice) house, the money that was saved by not renting a place got added to our food and alcohol budget! We were given orders to spend $250 on beer alone and to purchase as little of BudMillerCoors as possible. “Sir, yes Sir!”
I can only describe the experience as if I were handed a fistful of twenties as an 8 year old and let loose in Toys R Us. “OK, let’s get some Dogfish Head 60 Minute Ale and some 90 Minute Ale...hey look, Sweetwater Festive Ale is available...Allagash just came to the state so let’s get some Belgian White and Grand Cru...we have to get some people t try Unibroue La Fin Du Monde...hey, Lagunitas Kill Ugly Radio is here!!!” You get the idea. If it was made in Milwaukee or St. Louis, it wasn't on the list.
Grudgingly, we did by a few sixers of macro swill but it was such a miniscule amount that you could hardly find it in our three shopping carts of GOOD BEER. Even more impressive were our estimation skills. When the final beer bottle was rung up, the total came to $249.48 -- 52 cents under budget! Hot damn.
The reception to the good beer selection at the party was phenomenal. The 24 bottles of fizzy macro blandness stood largely untouched by the end of the evening and everyone was trying out styles of beer they never had before. Unlike certain publicized tasks that turn out to be fiascos, this was truly a case of Mission Accomplished. |

| The great thing about Lagunitas is that not only do they make great beer, but it's very affordable. Their Cappucino Stout, Undercover Shut Down Ale, Censored, Brown Shugga - all great stuff, plus many others. |

| Yeah nothing like shopping with someone else's money. Whenever I get to do that I'm reminded of the old Wheel of Fortune format where they used to show all the items with the prices on them and Pat would give the contestant a running total of how much they have left: "I'll take the Hawaiian Cruis for 3,000" "That leaves you with $50, we can give you that in a gift certificate if you like".

Even though I'm only in the office once, maybe twice a week I as pleasantly surprised to find they stock the beer fridge with microbrews and no BudMillerCoors is allowed. This decree came down from the co-founders of the company too. |

| Jimbo,
Were you given this assignment via an old time tape recorder?
Did the voice give you 15 seconds before the tape self-destructed?
Will you insist on people calling you Mr. Phelps?
Was it Tom Cruise that played the part of YOU in the movie?
Beer is JUST THAT DAMN IMPORTANT! |
