If there is a bigger buzzkill day than December 26th, I’d like to know what it is. All the anticipation is gone, the kids have been overwhelmed with the crazy goings on for a month, the holiday lights aren’t as fun to turn on, and you realize that you still have to eat all those cookies and candy before you can even consider getting back to a saner diet.
Christmas actually went pretty well, minus the very odd feeling of hearing thunder on Christmas. Look, I know that there wasn’t snow when this Jesus kid was born and he wasn’t born on the pagan holiday of December 25, but there’s something to be said for a white Christmas to get you into the holiday mood. There were at least 50/50 odds when I was growing up in Detroit that we would have a white Christmas. I do recall one Christmas where I was crestfallen because it was 63 degrees and rainy. I couldn’t go outside to try out my new NFL football (with the Pete Rozelle signature). I know that football is meant to be played in the raw elements that Mother Nature throws at us, but I didn't like (and still don't) getting new things dirty.
This wasn’t meant to be a negative post, as yesterday was quite fun and it was neat to have our first “family of four” Christmas. About the only negative thing that happened was that the Hungry Hungry Hippo game we got for Ally is missing a pink hippo head. That’s right - we only got 3 heads! I don’t know if the other hippos got too hungry and resorted to cannibalism in the box but it’s definitely MIA. Perhaps the overworked child in China overlooked it when he coughed up bloody phlegm caused by fiberglass, lead and asbestos particles in the factory he worked at. Regardless, we’re missing a hippo head although we made do with three starving hippos; at least until we return it to Target and hope that our replacement box didn’t also fall victim to what is obviously a seedy black market for plastic hippo heads.

| Omigosh I love that game! Sorry about the missing head. Maybe a hungry hungry Siberian tiger ate it (lame, bad taste joke). I second your Dec. 26 buzzkill observation. I was cheerful in the house, which still looks like the bomb of Christmas went off quite recently. But when we drove to the gym today to workout (shoulda stayed home to eat chocolate) I was overcome with melancholy. Brown snow, tattered old decorations, campaign signs desperately adorning every corner, and ALL the songs on the radio were depressing and downbeat. "Only 364 days until Santa comes again," I thought, and I almost cried. Favorite song for today: St. Stephen's Day Murders, by The Chieftains and Elvis Costello. |

| Great song suggestion! I just bought that on iTunes since I knew it would play in my head all day now anyway. :) For another cool Elvis Costello clip, check out this link (thanks to Big Daddy for the link on his blog) - http://www.zenarchery.com/?p=127 |

| Not only did my fam have HHH , but I was just thinking of this game walking into Target on 12/24... The foreshadowing! I've noticed many of the board games in toy stores/depts are just repackaged 70s & 80s toys. I guess classic toys never really die... |

| Something must be going on with the pink hippos in that game. We've had ours for a few years and while we have all the heads, the pink one doesn't work as well as the other 3. Doesn't matter though, as that game is among those collecting dust as the boys spend their time on the Wii or computer. The only non-electronics that are a hit with them are the legos and a marble-track thing. |

| It snowed on Christmas Day in Yelm, Washngton for the first time in 25 years. Nice. It stuck around on the ground for a half hour or so, and then we had on and off snow flurries and rain mix. It was a beautiful sky with some big blue gaps in between the darkest of the clouds.

What's worse (to me) is the first day you return to work from a great vacation. I can deal with Boxing Day - the bloom is still on the rose for me the day after. |
