Georgia has an odd practice of naming roads and highways after people who are still alive. While this might be OK when naming a road after, say, ex-presidents (Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Ronald Reagan Parkway come to mind), it becomes dicier when you name a road after a defrocked bishop of a church. Heck, they’ve even named a part of I-285 Cynthia McKinney Highway and we all know how it’s great to recognize someone so rational and evenhanded as her. I don’t care what side of the political spectrum you sit on; naming a portion of a highway after her is akin to Louisiana naming a portion of I-10 after David Duke.
Were I someone famous, I really don’t think I’d want a road or building named after me; at least not while alive. I understand it’s other people who nominate your name but there’s still some ego involved in saying “yes” to something like that.
What got me to thinking about this is what I believe to be the most insignificant naming of a road of anywhere I know. In fact, calling it a road is a stretch. In our park (Glenlake Park) the pool is closest to the main road and there are several parking spots next to the administrative/changing room. Right next to that is an indentation in the road where it’s hard to tell whether or not you can even legally park there. It strays from the park road by maybe 20 feet (see photo below).
Last year they installed a street sign in this little pseudo cul de sac. Now we all know that the name of a road is parallel to the street itself. Sometimes a devious person will rotate the signs to mess people up but this particular sign indicates that the “road” they named after someone, Claudia Whaley Court, is this little area that is not the main park road. After doing a Google search, it appears she is the program supervisor for tennis and aquatic services at the park. I guess it’s a nice gesture for her but the road couldn’t be any smaller.
So here’s to you, Claudia Whaley, Queen of the Smallest Road Ever. At the very least, you can’t be any worse than Cynthia McKinney.

I had an English teacher in college who used a twist on your title. The old quote is "In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king" but the teacher used to say "In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is a nuisance." Also, I'd hate to live on a street named after James..."Yeah, I'd like to place an order for Delivery. It's 119 Douchebag lane." :)

Before anyone brings it up, the "Court" designation is not for the tennis courts right next to it, as this is an official Decatur street sign.

You should be proud -- now if you Google her name, your blog appears as #3. :)

... upon further studying of the picture ... really? That's a "road"? If a road can be classified as a nubbin -- that's it right there. I know Harley-Davidson riders that couldn't do a u-turn in that space!

from Roadsideamerica.com - The other odd claim to fame: McKinley Street -- named for the President -- is only 15 ft. long, making it the World's Shortest Street. There's a little sign on a pole so you won't miss it.<br><br>July 2007: Frank Devlin wrote us about a new "World's Shortest Street": "Guinness Book of Records states that the worlds shortest street is in Scotland! Ebenezer Place in Wick, Caithness was measured at 6 ft 9 ins yes six feet nine inches. The Guinness Book of Records entered this in Nov 2006."<br>

This made me think what road I'd like named after me, while I'm still alive to enjoy it. I think one of those "magnetic hills" where when you put your car in neutral there's an optical illusion that you are coasting UP the hill rather than down.
