I have avoided talking about hockey all year on this blog since it tends to turn people off but I figured what will be on TV tomorrow might entice the casual sports fan to check out NBC at 1 PM.  For those of you utterly bored with football, or for those who like football but are tired of all the insignificant bowl games going on at this time of year, you might want to check out what the NHL is doing.  The Buffalo Sabres are hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins OUTSIDE at Ralph Wilson Stadium where the Bills normally play.

After the smashing success of the NHL’s first outdoor venture a few years ago in Edmonton, it looks like the NHL will be hosting these possibly once a year or every other year in northern cities.  With Buffalo, it’s a grab bag as to what the weather will be (rain, snow, sleet) and I question the starting time of 1 in the afternoon since the sun will be pounding down on the ice.  Tomorrow’s game won’t be the fastest you normally see (possible wet ice, wind conditions, precipitation) but I’ll bet it will still be interesting to see.  It looks like there will be 75,000+ people at the game tomorrow which could challenge the outdoor attendance record set at Michigan State when they hosted Michigan outdoors a few years ago.

It’s worth checking out.  At the last game in Edmonton, they played it at night and it was so cold the Montreal Canadiens goalie wore a toque on top of his helmet!

Hockey dork. To me all these outside games do is remind everyone why they play inside. Here's hoping for a blizzard. THAT would make things interesting. It would be similar to the fog bowl at Soldier Field a few years back where you depended on the TV announcers to tell you what was happening (even they had trouble seeing) and most of the people at the game had no idea what was going on.

As of right now, Buffalo is supposed to get 3-6 inches of snow tomorrow. If that's the case, there's a chance the game will be called off.

I could not ever be as utterly bored with football as I will soon be with pro basketball.
