Today is our last day in the “Queen” building (5 Concourse Parkway) as we move into a smaller (and cheaper) building next week.  For those of you in Atlanta, I’ll now be just north of Perimeter Mall instead of just west of it.  While it’s technically closer to home, mall traffic will probably make it a slightly longer drive.  I took a snapshot of a coworker’s shirt today which is very appropriate for the occasion.

This building was probably my second favorite building behind the one I worked in while in Midtown.  I liked that one the most because of the view and the proximity to lots of places to walk to for lunch.  An added bonus was that if you walked a block east off Peachtree you were transported to beautiful residential palaces which made for a nice lunchtime walk.  The only odd thing about that building was we were on the 13th floor.  Most buildings, out of superstition, skip over the 13th floor and name it the 14th floor.  Not this one but I never had any bad luck while working there.

With the exception of the unreliable elevators, this building we’re in is pretty nice.  Plus we have (had) a great view from the 22nd floor.  Initially when I started we had the entire floor which gave us a 360 degree view of the metro area, including a nice skyline view.  When we downsized, we were moved to the northern half of the floor.  This eliminated our city view (southward) and also the convenient view of how traffic was on I-285.  The northern view is nice on non-smoggy days since you can see the foothills of the north Georgia mountains.

Now we’ll be moving to the second floor of a building with a lot less window views.  We went to check out the floor space and the yellow they painted on the walls might be bright enough to force me to wear SPF 15 sunblock each day.  I’m not sure how many canaries died to make that pigmentation of yellow, but it had to number in the tens of thousands.  If there’s one advantage, there is a new shopping area across the street that has lots of restaurants and shops within walking distance.  It’s one of those newer and “smarter” growth areas where the stores are very individual looking to make it look like a small village, which is a nice trend away from the massive swaths of concrete parking lots for a typical shopping area.

One thing I won’t miss are the filthy cretins who share the floor with us.  They can swim in their own filth now.  Now someone else is going to have to flush their handiwork down.

The bottom line is that even though we might be moving somewhat downward in terms of office space niceness, as long as I’m employed and they keep the direct deposits crediting my checking account on the 15th and last of each month, they can place me in a janitor closet for all I care.

Restaurants & retail getaways a short walk away instead of the traditional "suburban office deli/bad coffee shop" == you win. The only more important amenity for an office space would be mass transit access. Views, extra square footage and "niceness" (wha?) just represent money that they're not putting in your pocket every month....

Yeah - what JA3 said. Plus - not having to use elevators at all is a large bonus in my opinion.

I'm definitely looking forward to walking up the stairs again.
