Have you Made It? Minimize

There have been a few instances this past month where I’m reminded of people who have “Made It”. Regardless of whether you like that artist or athlete or actor, the fact remains that if you say “Bend it like…”, you know that person is talking about David Beckham. If someone says “Yo, Adrian” in a stroke-addled tone, you know it’s a reference to Sylvester Stallone’s ‘Rocky’ character.

The first instance of this that triggered me to write this post happened a few weeks ago. I saw a rinkside banner ad while watching a hockey game on TV that was at the RBC Center (where the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes play). It simply said “Manilow. January 20th. First, you don’t see a lot of rinkside ads that are time sensitive. Most last for a majority of the season. Second, you don’t even need the guy’s first name. Even if he’s the butt of jokes for many music fans, the bottom line is the dude has Made It.

It reminds me of an ad for a famous lawyer in Peoria, IL back when I was at Bradley. Jay Janssen has his own law firm down there and his TV tagline at the end of each commercial was “Janssen. One name says it all.” Well, maybe for a 30 mile radius, the name “Janssen” means “rich lawyer in the middle of podunk Illinois” but outside that circle, the last name Janssen could mean anyone else. Famke Janssen is a heckuva lot more famous than Jay. Jay was never a Bond girl who could crush men to their deaths between her thighs. The thought of dying between a 60 year old midwestern Swedish man's bony legs is about as unappealing a thought as there can be. But you can’t put “Janssen. January 20th” on a billboard without people wondering who it is. Barry Manilow has no such problem.

The other occurrence where it hit me that “Man, this guy has Made It” was when I was making a quick late night run to the local grocery store. This was the time where you can see boxes that are in the middle of being unpacked sometimes strewn about the store since the foot traffic isn’t that high. In this one grocery cart were several opened up boxes that said “Grisham” on the outside. Nothing else. Just "Grisham”. Again, it doesn’t matter whether you like John Grisham’s writing or not but the fact remains that when there are boxes of your books appearing in grocery stores with just your last name on the outside of the box, you have Made It.

We can leave the "Well, you have to sell your soul in order to have Made It by these standards" conversation for another day.

I would argue that I have "Made It" when I can live the lifestyle of a Grisham or Manilow, and have *absolutely nobody* outside my personal or professional acquaintances know my name. I would have a lot more fun being a "fat cat" if I could could also do "normal person" things whenever I wanted without fearing for my privacy or safety.

Also, having grown up 80 miles from Peoria, I can say with certainty that I was outside the "Janssen Radius."

You guys weren't inundated with Jay Janssen ads?! Consider yourself lucky. Good point on the anonymity thing. I'd rather live that lifestyle than have paparazzi hound me every minute of my life.

I'm not sure last name recognition is a great vehicle for determining whether or not one has "made it". For example, last names like Manson, Dahmer, etc. all have last name recognition, but certainly have not made ot for the reasons depicted in your blog.

Additionally, more common last names like Simpson muddy the waters as well. Are we talking about OJ, Jessica, or Homer?? Doesn;t work for them simply because more than one person with the last name 'Simpson' has "made it".

This reminds me of a skit/song I did at the Second City - it was right at the time that Andrew Cunanan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Cunanan) killed Versace. Well the skit had Cunanan in Hell, being harrassed by the devil and his minions and it poked fun at the fact that all the news outlets pronounced his name differently (Coon-o-nin, Coo-na-nin, Coo-nah-nin) and the main verse of the song was "What good is fame if the mispronounce your name?"

James -- our TV & radio was all out of Champaign and Decatur, so I'd assume that's why we never experienced the power of Peoria celebrities. Seems strange to me now, but growing up in the Champaign/Bloomington/Decatur triangle, Peoria might as well have been another planet... :)

JA3: After spending 5 years there (yes I was on the Bradley bonus plan) I'd have to say Peoria IS another planet. It's the planet where they still "cruise Main" in their 85 Firebirds, drinking Busch out of the can while listening to Huey Lewis and the News. It's also the planet where you can stumble out of strip joint full of farmers, cross the street and be in a dive bar with live blues being played. It's also the planet of "Wander drunkenly home safely past the projects, but get mugged in the plaza around the corner from the most popular college kids bar". Great place to go to school.

Re: Have you Made It? I live in SF, so... yes. By Syl on 1/17/2008 11:37 AM
Due to my lovely and unusual arrangement of the 12 letters in my last name - people remember me long after I've used their services. Two years later at, say, a garage. "Oh yeah - I remember you.." as they look up from filling in the Last Name, it's a blessing. Good humor helps with the inevitable mis-spellings. Oddly, many people misspell my first name too - they're much more used to putting an 'L' after an 'S' - it happens *all* the time.
