I need a group opinion Minimize

This is s time-sensitive post which is why I have two entries today.  As I’ve expressed my love for Trader Joe’s in the past, I had a disturbing experience today while eating a sandwich bought from their Midtown location yesterday.  With 3 bites left to go in my Grilled Steak with Onion sandwich, I bit down on something hard.  I didn’t think much about it as I assumed it was a stray piece of bone from the meat or something like that.  As I took out the not-yet-chewed hunk out of my mouth, my eyes lit up.  As you can see in the picture below, there was a plastic shard a tad more than a half inch long in my sandwich.  Thankfully I bit down on it sideways because had that pointy tip been sticking up, it would have impaled itself into the roof of my mouth.

I’m not a litigious person but I feel the need to write to Trader Joe’s corporate office to at least give them a heads-up that wherever these sandwiches are being made, there might have been a blip in their quality control.  Am I being an alarmist or is it my right as a consumer to say “Guys, this doesn’t reflect well on you.  As a loyal customer, I really want to continue with purchasing your sandwiches but now I’m not so sure”?

Serious comments are encouraged.   Sorry for the poor photo quality but if I zoom any more with my cameraphone it becomes even more blurry.

>"Serious comments are encouraged." - But not necessary! .....Let's play a game of fill in the blank - choose the response you will most likely receive)....Dear (Valued Customer/Sir and or Madame/Jerk), Thank you for writing us concerning (this important matter/this grave error on our part/this pathetically lame attempt at getting a free sandwich). We here at Trader Joes take matters like this very seriously and assure you that we are taking steps (to have the matter rectified/to have the employee disciplined/to have our team of high priced lawyers squash your case before it gets to court). Please accept this coupon good for (a lifetimes supply of Trader Joe sandwiches/a large cup of our steaming hot coffee/one free anal raping) along with our (humblest/most sincere/who gives a shit) apologies. Signed (The CEO/The Management/The Janitor). - All kidding aside, lamer people have made millions off of similar cases, look at the dumb broad who burnt herself on McDonald's coffee...now all of us have to read a warning sign on anything that might be warmer than 70 Degrees. You win your case and soon all TJ sandwiches will read "Warning, may contain shards of industrial plastic." You may have a case and some ambulance chaser may jump on board, but I think that the fact that you didn't get hurt or swallow it will me a form letter and free coupon is all you will receive. Is it worth your time?

And with that being said....Man, that *IS* a tiny little pecker ya got there isn't it? ;)

Actually the concern was that that batch of sandwiches, wherever they were made, could contain other shards. I love Trader Joe's so I'll continue to frequent there since they have healthy, mostly-shard-free, affordable food.

A call is warranted, to protect other consumers. T Joes needs to know there is a problem with a machine at a plant. Maybe a case of 2 buck chuck for your troubles sir?

Mrs. General, who is a freelance editor, writes letters all the time to companies when they do something well, or when they do something poorly. She's never shrill or threatening, just - like you were leaning towards - "I usually like your products, but..." Some of the responses are like Erich's but many are very well done. It tells a lot about a company how they respond to stuff like this - not just with a free this or a coupon for that - some of the better companies do follow-ups. I definitely recommend you write a letter, if only for the possibility you might save someone else that wouldn't be as "lucky" as you. It's the right thing. Then sue their azz blind.

At first I was going to tell you to throw it away, move on and forget about it. But I agree that you should at least send them this picture with an e-mail explaining what happened. If you do like Trader Joe's you want to be sure there's not a bigger problem. A message to them will at least get them checking out their processes to make sure this isn't a chronic thing. Most likely it will result in them reaming their vendor who produces these sandwiches for them. Who knows, yours could be the umpteenth incident with their products that results in them making changes. I recently sent a note to Hinckley Springs with the lot # and location information for the flouride water (which we get for the kids because we have a private well) that we bought. It "tasted like pencils" as my son put it and I thought it had a real strong mineral taste that made it undrinkable. Just in case this was tainted and potentially dangerous I though I should let them know. The result was a form letter and a promised gift certificate or something. Of course I never did receive anything, which pretty much assures I'll never buy their product again. But at least I let them know either that their product sucked or something was wrong with that batch.

I reported it yesterday. I'll post an update if I get a response.
