Does peer pressure ever really end for guys? My guess is 'No' based on an experience at work yesterday. One of the guys bought us all pints of Ben & Jerry’s (Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough for yours truly) and passed them around yesterday afternoon. It was a very thoughtful gesture while we’re knee-deep in the middle of a software testing iteration. Now normally I’ll show some self-restraint and eat my Ben & Jerry’s pints, on the rare occasions that I do have them, in either 3 or 4 days.
We’ve done dumb things at work before but never have we collectively done stupid things as a collective. There’s no need to get into the specifics but let’s just say that everyone was goaded into finishing their entire pint. I don’t think I’ve ever finished more than ½ a pint in one sitting before. We’re all guys in our 30s and should know better than to ingest a day’s worth of allowable fat and 200% of the recommended saturated fat but yesterday the mood was “Self control be damned!”
Needless to say there was a constant line to the bathroom that afternoon as our digestive systems all revolted and rose up against us as one. I liken to feeling to the one time in high school when I ate a ½ pound of sour patch kids at the movie theater. You can feel the sugars doing their dastardly deed inside your stomach and you just have to ride out the storm until your body “rights the ship”.
I take full responsibility for not stopping the indulgence but sometimes the pain you know you’re going to experience is worth it for that 15 minutes of choco-cookie-sugar bliss, right?
