Dear BellSouth and AT&T,
Back in those “pre internet tubes” days, people relied on the phone book to get addresses and numbers. Perhaps the 200 people in the country with no internet access (the ones writing manifestos in the Montana wilderness), combined with a good chunk of the senior citizen population, still use actual phone books. The rest of us use either 411 or look it up online. So why is it you feel the need to send STACKS of books each year (see photo below) taking up valuable storage space and wasting precious trees?
Thanks to both your companies I get SEVEN fat books a year plopped onto my front porch. BellSouth White Pages – Business, BellSouth White Pages – Residential, AT&T White Pages – Business, AT&T White Pages – Residential, BellSouth Yellow Pages – A-L, BellSouth Yellow Pages – M-Z, AT&T Yellow Pages A-Z – SEVEN books I have no use for and simply toss into my recycling bin.
I’m not arguing that the phone book should be abolished; rather I think it should now be a “upon request” service. Heck, we haven’t even had a land line for over three years now so you’re giving your product away to non-customers! Thanks for nothing. Send beer next time.

| Very good "on request" idea, James. I actually use a phone book when I start new contracts since many of my gigs are in the boonies and I need to find a barber or oil change shop or brothel - I mean, dry cleaner. Other than that, you're right. It's a huge waste. |

| What makes this even more ridiculous is that ATT has owned Bellsouth for over a year now. So it is actually the same company sending you the duplicates. |

| Caruso, I think I have thrown out about 10 or 20 hectolitres of useless phone books in the past few years. Or is that a hectare? Maybe a dodecahedron? |

| I recently got an mailer asking me to advertise in the yellow pages. It was around $500/year. Not to bad a price in a bygone era, but compare that to a webpage that costs about $30/year and the yellow pages aren't even a consideration. |

| I spent 6 years working for the parent company of Thomas Register, for 100 years "the bible" of industrial sourcing. They made the transition, slowly and painfully, to an internet company. They were shipping the books for free the last 2 years or so before finally stopping altogether. You'd think the phone companies would just get the social security mailing list and send their books to those addresses ............................................. Incidentally, the yellow pages has their own web site with the same content as their books. So there's really no reason at all to have the books if you can get online. Kevin I think your $500 ad would buy you space (albeit likely waaaaay down in the search results) on their site as well. |

| We recently canceled our ad in the yellow pages. In the 2 years that the office has been open I think one person came from the actual yellow pages. Our listing is still in there, but I'm not wasting money on an ad again. I can't remember the last time I actually opened the book to find a number or address. |

| These days they are best used only for visitors and I think they're better and/or more often used in smaller towns.

A paper waste that bothers me is the candidates/campaigns for whatever office trying to hand out paper flyers that turn into trash to the commuters at the train stations. I say No thanks and then, Save a tree. .................................................................................................................................................................................................... We still have a land line, though - it's earthquake country. |
