I’ve never been into video games.  I’ve got nothing against them and actually enjoy watching others play but I rarely played them myself.  For whatever reason, even though I consider myself relatively athletic, I simply don’t have the hand-eye coordination necessary for success in video games.  There have been a few exceptions, like most golf games and Tetris, but those are rare cases.  In addition, being tethered to a computer screen all day at work makes me less wanting to plop down in front of the TV for something in addition to my normal TV shows and movies I watch.

So it comes as a surprise to most that I actually purchased a gaming system yesterday.  I have actually wanted a Nintendo Wii since it came out since it a) actually physically engages you in activity and b) the games are fun for the whole family.  Ironically, the first gaming system I’ve ever wanted is very hard to get.  Finding a Wii for sale is rare, as demand has exceeded output for quite some time.

When my coworker called me Tuesday night to tell me there was a Wii at a store he was in, I told him to buy it and I’d cut him a check the next day.  What’s funny is that while I waited all these months to find a Wii actually for sale, the Target by my work happened to all of a sudden have THREE Wiis for sale today!  There must have been a big shipment that just came to Georgia for something.  I’d been stalking that Target, since it’s by my work, for months and the glass enclosure for the Wii section has been empty every time I went by.  Now that I’ve had a Wii for 2 days it all of a sudden is stocked!

Anyway, we had a blast playing Wii Sports last night and I think it’s going to be a big hit in the Kirkpatrick household for quite some time.  It will be perfect for a rainy day so we can get some exercise.  I bought Guitar Hero 3 today and will be strumming my heart out for Satan tonight.

Have you had your first Wii injury yet?

Not yet but the lower back was stiff this morning. :)

Can I have all the books you and your soon-to-be under-educated children will now never read?

Considers himself relatively athletic, but has still back form playing video game. "Relatively athletic" is quickly falling into the James archive of self promoting propaganda like the "pleasantly surprised at my nad size" post from a few weeks back.

That's 'stiff' back. Sorry....

It's okay, Tim. It's hard, er, difficult to write "stiff" and "James" in the same sentence.

Hmmm...I've never had a problem...James is a Stiff....James Stiffed the waitress....James makes me st.......st......st.....ah, ok there we go, guess I would never think of him in that context (shudder)

I'm gonna pass on the chance to rip James this time. The Wii is pretty cool. The boxing is really a pretty good workout if you do it for 1/2 hour or so. The whole hard to find thing is very interesting to me. Nintendo not only made a good product but has done an amazing job of keeping the quantities limited, thus making seem even more popular than it is. .......................................................................................................... As far as being fun for the whole family, my wife could care less about it. I think she bowled once and that was it. Have fun with it James, just don't wear crocs while playing it.

I'm going to rat Megan out here. I brought home Guitar Hero last night and after she nailed her first song (Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot"), it was impossible to get the guitar away from her. She has The Fever now too.

Here's another great reason for a Wii for the elderly generation too (courtesy of one of my favorite bloggers - Amy). http://amykane.typepad.com/northhampton/2008/03/wii-bowling-tog.html

I bought Rock Band for the Xbox 360 and Renee loves it. I play guitar while she bangs on the drums...it's the first game where she has taken an active interest. I have considered buying Guitar hero, Aerosmith edition (one of her favorite groups) to try and rope her into that as well. If they ever produce a Guitar Hero Metallica edition, or Pink Floyd - I am all over that!

BTW, General, I loved your comment. If it makes you feel better, I had a hard time explaining to Ally what a video game was until I actually plugged it in. It hit me that she had never been exposed to video games before (a good thing, IMHO). Trust me though, books take priority. :)

I'll never forget the look on the inlaws face when my oldest told them that Daddy was beating Mommy! Wife loves the Wii boxing game, I have devised a way to destroy all comers and not break a sweat. Flick of the wrist grasshopper!
