Progress can be a two-edged sword sometimes. It’s a necessary component of accommodating for more people, it allows for things to be updated over the course of time (from people’s clothing styles to renovations of buildings), and it also can revitalize a neighborhood.

I think where it has a negative connotation is where our personal memories get wiped out when a building or home is torn down or a community institution goes bankrupt or is forced to move from a place they’ve been for a long time. We take it personal when a place where good memories occurred ceases to physically exist. The latter is what is happening with the original Goose Island brewpub now that their owners have squeezed every last penny of rent they can get from them.

I guess the only thing I’m really annoyed with concerning Goose Island’s imminent move is that the owner of this building fails to understand the importance of Goose Island being a vital component in the revitalization of its surrounding neighborhood. For those who recall what that area was like in the mid-1990s, to say it was “transitional” would be generous. Goose Island, U.S. Beer Company and Best Buy were the only 3 places I can recall worth venturing into that area for. Now that the area is close to downtown and is considered highly desirable, the owners are trying to squeeze double the production of the golden eggs from their goose.

But that’s the American way, right? Ride the success on the backs of your subordinates, become amazingly rich, forget the people who got you there and pull the rug out from under them when it becomes convenient. Perhaps I’m being dramatic and by no means am I anti-capitalist. Business people can do what they want with their money and investments. Far be it from me to tell them how to make money. Sentiment doesn’t play a part in business transactions like this so while I’m agitated that Goose Island might be forced to move from their flagship location, I can’t fault the owners for knowing what they could charge in rent for that physical structure. It doesn’t mean I have to like it though.

Let’s take the Way Back Machine to 1998 when a 26 year old earned his M.B.A. (Master’s of Beer Appreciation) with his friend Neil Sullivan (who actually was earning it for the second time – was it his Doctorate?). Here are two pictures of Graduation Day with our waitress. One of these photos has me holding a growler (about ½ gallon) of beer. MBA students got one of these for every 10 beers we drank. I still have that t-shirt. The beer is long gone. The memory remains.

What's with the Mona Lisa smile and Grinch T-shirt? Stone wash jean shorts are another dead giveaway as to how old those shots are....

Actually, I took a closer look at the original POLAROID (Neil brought a camera) and I was wearing really wrinkly khaki shorts. Either way, the combo with that and the Grinch shirt never caught on nationwide. Not sure why. :) Erich, when I was rummaging through other pictures from that timeframe last night, I realized I wore that same Grinch shirt on our trip to Boston with Tuffy and the famous "James holding Red Auerbach's crotch" shot has that same shirt!

That would explain all of the "Grich who stole Red Aurbach's balls" books and animated specials I have heard so much about....

Like I told James when this news first broke (and I'm sure he knows all this, I'm not ripping on him....much) ---- the news story announcing the end of the pub pointed out that Goose Island had been given a sweetheart deal in that building, a 15-year lease below market rent. From the landlord's perspective, of course they got a benefit from revitalizing the area, but *only* if they eventually get market rent on the space; a revitalized neighborhood does a landlord no good if they leave money on the table while negotiating a lease................. From Goose Island's perspective, running a bar/grill is a shitty, high-overhead low-margin business even with a sweetheart rent deal. That was a HUGE space for a bar&grill, and its marketing/goodwill value has greatly decreased now that you can buy their beer anywhere in Chicago and over a much larger area by way of their new distribution channels ............. At least in their wrigleyville space they have a higher-visibility location with 81 guaranteed full houses a year -- it wouldn't surprise me if they opened that space years ago in anticipation of not being able to keep the original location ......... so sentiment is great, I have a lot of great memories of the place and will miss going there with my father-in-law on our visits, but it probably wasn't making business sense to anyone involved anymore; better to have a business there that will put money in people's pockets.

Nice James, but the handshake doesn't look very sincere. If they wanted to keep the deal the business should've tried to get a lovely 99 year lease....at the time......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................I admit to some favorite shirts and try not to wear or pack the same ones on occasions that warrant photographs. Like birthdays and vacations.

Great post Cap'n - I love the scan of your hard earned MBA card and the polaroids I took of you at that proud moment. I completely forgot I insisted on taking your graduation photo - gotta love it, stone washed jeans and all.

And yes, I've lost count of how many times I've Goose Island management to start a PhD program - guess they couldn't find a beer-related name for that acronym.
