As gas prices have risen and risen and risen some more, the “lightbulb” in my head didn’t flicker on until the other week. It’s been depressing enough seeing a gallon go up 10 cents at a time every few days. Even worse though? For those borderline OCD people like myself, there was a subtle shift in my pumping habits. Ever since I’ve been pumping gas as a teen, I find the need to have the total amount end in ‘0’ or ‘5’. This means that if the pump automatically stops at $38.88, I need to quickly pump the gas price up to $38.90. If I accidentally jump from $38.89 to $38.91, then $38.95 is my next target.

With gas hovering near $4 a gallon, those quick “squeeze and release” moves we use don’t go in penny increments anymore. They typically are jumping 3 or 4 cents at a time now. If I get to $38.88, my only hope is I can get to $38.95 or $39.00. Believe it or not, if I can’t round it up to the next multiple of five, I “let go” and let the amount be what it is.

My 4 ½ year old daughter is quite the handful when it comes to mental games and trying to stay one step ahead of her requires a lot of mental energy. We did have to lay the law down last week though when, in the middle of me reprimanding her, she starts to walk away from me while loudly saying “BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH”. Once again, it was a combination of me not trying to laugh out loud but trying to be stern on the outside to let her know that is never an acceptable behavior to do when her parents are talking to her. Obviously kids mimic what they hear so I must have said that at some point(s) in the past and she parroted the phrase.

Knowing you, I am surprised she didn't mimic "Kiss my pale blue scottish ass, butt-munch!"

Jason's on the Move By Jason's Mom on 5/16/2008 3:01 PM
James, sorry to co-opt your blog for non-Kirkpatrick news, but the Bradley-ites might be interested (or not) in knowing that Jason will be moving to Portland, OR, where he will be Director of Student Activities at Lewis & Clark College. .................................................................. I know, BLAH BLAH BLAH...

First of all you are an OCD freak, just fill the damn thing up so you have less trips to the gas station. Being an efficiency freak (in theory anyway) I find it best to put the thing on autofill and get back in the car to reset my miles, read an e-mail or two and then get the best song that's on the radio at the moment playing. Of course I also tend to flirt with running out of gas because I can't stand to think I've gone to the station too soon. I swore at myself yesterday when I filled it up and less than 15 of the 15.6 gallons were required, damn I could have gone another day without filling up! .............................................................................................

Where was I? .............................................................................

Oh yeah, just wait until your kids learn sarcasm, (earlier in some houses than others-I blame the wife). Nothing quite like a 7-8 year old smart mouthing you. Luckily the older one's addicted to Wii so a quick grounding always ends that behavior real quick. .. ....................... Who's Jason anyway??

Jason's Mom, that's great news! As always, I get any updates about him from you. :) Email me and I will give you Trey's email. He also lives in the Portland area. Murph, email me and I'll remind you who Jason is.

Wait wait wait. Did the Saints just say "Genius" about James?! Someone take note of the day and time... there has been a commonality...the world has shifted...to the more compulsive side of the pump. Cheers, you guys! ....................................................................................................................................................................................................................... We keep the gas at a higher level in the tank, you know why - my usual rationale......earthquake(s). When there's no power, there's no pumping gas. Plus it keeps the end-of-the-tank gunk to a minimum. ................................................................................................................................................................................... I can predict with some larger margin of safety that sarcasm will be a permanent in your household, James. It may even be inherited. Laugh and shake your head afterwards - right here - as the remarks get funnier along with the size of her little brain. You should probably start prohibiting the girl's eye-roll response/reaction right now (if you haven't already).

James: I think I know who Jason is. I seem to remember some snot nose kid with a last name that rhymes with "shiner" and "diner" scurrying around whilst I was doing my drunk obnoxious visiting alumnus thing. I'm guessing this is the same Jason.

Re: Gas Pumps and Gas Bags By James on 5/19/2008 2:41 PM
Murph, the last name rhyming thing is correct, although since his mom reads this you meant to type "fantastic young undergrad who made me feel welcome even though I reeked of Irish whiskey and Big Al's dancers", right? ;)

If only Jason's mom knew how many times she bought booze for the whole fraternity house.....er um, I mean BOOKS for all of us to study with....<ahem> damn, I said the loud part quiet and the quiet part loud.....

Might as well tell her about "E&E Deli" and be done with it. That was what appeared on your credit card bill anytime we were at Sully's.

James! Erich! WTF are you 2 doing? Have you forgotten your pledging in ceremony? Those are some of our most sacred secrets. Certain Delts will lose their inheritance if those secrets get out! Next you'll be blabbing the secret codes for the boat and the liquor store on Main. Or that Jimmy's restaurant was really a bar...

Oh wait, oops.

I do know that the secret phrase for VIP treatment at Big Al's was Helvettica Beverages - The guy who ran the Sumo Wrestling Suits for us said it to the bouncer on "Dan Day" and we got VIP treatment all night long....

Re: Gas Pumps and Gas Bags By Jason's Mom on 5/20/2008 2:26 PM
So all those times when Jason said he was studying at the library and then going to volunteer at the hospital before his shift at the crisis hotline he was really doing something else?

Re: Gas Pumps and Gas Bags By Erich on 5/20/2008 5:10 PM
No, he was really doing all of that stuff.....he was just drunk off his a$$ while he did it....;)
