Not much time to write today but I did want to show a picture (courtesy of the NY Times) I’ve been holding on to since the Pope visited New York City a few months ago. Who knew the Pope was a connoisseur of pimp shoes?

Look up "papal shoes" in wikipedia. For a while there the rumor was that those shoes were Prada -- turns out that wasn't the case, but his taste for high style has had a few people asking if he might not be a little light in those loafers...

I'm sure they only make him feel like he's pimp-walkin'. Wikipedia says that "A sceptre or scepter is a symbolic ornamental staff held by a ruling monarch, a prominent item of kingly regalia..." When did scepters come into humbled-by-faith papal style, anyway? He's looking a bit like Merlin the magician to me in this shot.

It's the lace trim on the bottom of his nightie -- sorry, papal gown -- that gets me. What is it with pope shoes? His predecessor wore Bruno Maglis...hey, maybe John Paul killed Nicole Simpson!

Syl: I think the "humbled by faith" thing went away hundreds of years ago when they started amassing the world's biggest treasure. Or when they started selling forgiveness to the highest bidder. Or when they started using their power and influence to place tithes on the commoners. Or when.... well you get the idea. .......................................................................................................... Pimp shoes seem very apropos to me.
