I feel naked today. I’ve been working in the real world (i.e. post-college) since 1995 and never before have I worn shorts before. Ever since I’ve been working for internet-based companies (since 2000), a lot of people wear shorts. I never had an issue with that but it simply wasn’t something I ever did, as is evidenced by this blog post from earlier this year.
This summer has been different though. Our parent company is real casual (as long as you get the job done, they don’t care what you wear) and even our bosses have taken to wearing shorts as the weather gets hotter (supposed to be 92 today). On top of that, they even sent out an email stating that it was ok to wear short and sandals. Then to pile on, I was the only person in our office who wasn’t wearing shorts last week.
Which leads us here today and Yours Truly is not only in khaki shorts but also nice sandals. I refuse to wear a t-shirt though. I have to draw the line somewhere so it’s still polo shorts for me. This allows me not to feel like a total schlub. I also didn’t want to expose coworkers to my chicken legs but since they’re all showing theirs, I wound up looking like the prude as of late.
I’ll be fine with wearing shorts in 90+ degree weather which in Atlanta can be from late April to late September. As long as I don’t get an email from management saying that Speedos are OK to wear, I think I’ll be able to transition just fine.
