Wishful thought of the day:
Imagine your salary today but living near the time you were born or even decades prior to that. You’d be living high on the hog. Heck, if I were living in 1880 on my salary today, I’d feel like one of those Robber Barons. This train of thought was initiated when I got my yearly Happy Birthday card from my insurance agent. It’s the same one every year but I do enjoy reading it because it outlines the events that happened in my birth year. One of those stats was that the average salary in 1972 was $11,489, compared to today’s average salary of $48,201. Of course with the increase in fuel affecting every other cost in life, I’d daresay that number would have to be pumped up 5 or 7 grand just to have the same earning power as you did two years ago.
On a related note as we’re interviewing people at our work the past few weeks, I got to wondering what my resume will look like 20 years from now in terms of key items like place(s), titles, and companies/industries. Everyone at work talked about their college majors last week and only a few people had actually gone to school for computer science or any related degree for what we do now. Of course, the internet was still a newborn baby (at least in terms of the public’s conscious) back then. But it is interesting to see other people's career paths. The head VP of engineering at my first software company was a theater major. In my current QA group, we have a marketing major (me), a psychology major, a political science major and a computer science major.
One more birthday note - Megan and the girls have given me chocolate from Starbucks this past Father’s Day and today and I had never had them before that. I’m not a huge shill for random stuff but I’ve gotta say that even though Starbucks maybe has over-expanded in some areas, this venture into chocolate is a home run.

| Yeah, that does piss me off I share a birthday with the Nimrod. It's also Sly Stallone's, Nancy Reagan's and Willie Randolph's birthday. I need some better famous people to be born on July 6!!!! |

| Best wishes, James. Hope you have many more, and all of them happy. Ah, 1972. I lost my virginity that year, well, if masturbation counts. |

| I would have never conceived of my 'career' path. A few of my resumes look like I am (at least) two different people.

...

The kids these days (yep, I said it - hee!) no longer need to be trained on how to use Windows after they are hired - that change happened in the last ten years or so. My Business degree works anywhere, but now, with the practical application of life, it encompasses a few things related to computers besides antiques and antiquated language... (punch cards and Fortran baby! That was a few careers and a few birthdays ago.) |
