Guilty until proven innocent

Here’s what the steroid issue in baseball has done to this lifetime fan. Instead of fully enjoying what was truly a wonderful story in last night’s Home Run Derby with Josh Hamilton and his unbelievable comeback from his self-inflicted personal problems, I couldn’t help but think what kind of masked drug he was taking that allowed him to hit so many 500+ foot long home runs.
To give people who don’t know his story a quick recap – Hamilton was a former first round pick who wasted his millions on his drug addictions. He was three years removed from playing baseball and now he’s on a first place team and among the league leaders in a few offensive categories, thus earning him a spot on the All Star Team. You couldn’t help but root for the guy last night and every aspect of the evening was a feel good story except for the fact that he still lost the contest despite out-homering his opponent by 15 homeruns over the course of the evening.
When I made the mention of what drugs he was on, I didn’t even consider his past history. It could have been Alex Rodriguez or Vladimir Guerrero or anyone else who hasn’t been tainted by the current scandal. I simply couldn’t enjoy the moment because I know that 5 years down the line, maybe even 10, we’ll find out that Hamilton was taking some substance undetectable by MLB’s drug testing scientists.
This is why I’ve really backed off of my lifelong love of baseball this year in a steep fashion. I’ve barely watched any games this year, I haven’t been to a game yet, I’ve abandoned my fantasy baseball teams and I actually hadn’t even heard of some of the All Stars. That’s something that hasn’t ever happened in my lifetime before. But take the inability for me to relate to arrogant people who make millions for playing a game, coupled by the fact that we know guys are still cheating and simply haven’t gotten caught yet, I simply don’t care about baseball in it’s current state and don’t know if I’ll ever return to being the hardcore fan I once was. That’s what truly stinks. There’s nothing more fun than taking in a summer game at Wrigley or Fenway but even at hallowed places like that, try getting the cheapest seat in the house for less than $50. It’s simply not possible.
So here’s to you, Bud Selig. You can make all the claims that baseball has never been more profitable but the difference between the “haves” and the “have nots” has widened to such a degree that teams in certain cities are guaranteed that their team will never ever have a chance of winning the World Series. If you don’t believe me, ask any Pirates or Royals or Orioles fan what the chances are that their teams aren’t destined to simply be feeder teams, or glorified AAA clubs, for the foreseeable future. Don’t point to Tampa’s success this season and say that’s parity. In the end the Red Sox and Yankees will prevail because they have the resources and Tampa will lose their current roster of good players to the bigger teams in a few years. |

| HR Derby on - Sound off. The combo of Berman's Hackneyed "back back back" routine and Joe Morgan's 2nd grade insights is enough to drive any sane person into a murderous rampage. Though, if they could take those two Bozos and add in Tim McCarver, I might just tune in so I could watch that Train wreck happen. |

| Ditto on what Erich said... James, walk back to the light. Baseball can still mean so much and though I don't disagree with anything you wrote, it just convinces me that baseball is so great a game that even the Seligs and Bondses and Palmieros of the world can't ruin it completely. Do what I've done - embrace minor league baseball, coach a Little League team and draft all the kids with hot moms, watch "Field of Dreams", etc. Your love and respect for the game will return. |

Move toward the light from the darkness |

| Hold on, this will be a long post. .................................................................................................................................................................................... Josh Hamilton?! Jebus H., James, this is the man who should be under the LEAST of your suspicions. Seriously, I enjoyed it so much more because he was the one who was going yard and putting on the awesome show. Also - I'm thrilled lazy-ass (for the Phillies) fielder Abreu is no longer any record holder. What bugged me was the loooosers saying no ball had "ever" been hit out of the stadium - oh besides the (we white men don't believe black men before -say- 1960) Negro league - no one can verify that because I guess we were white and they were black back then. HORSESHIT. ......................................................................................................................................................................................................... I muted and unmuted the volume over and over. Here's a quote from my house, "Who the hell do they blow to keep getting these gigs?" Chris freaking idiot please Burn-him-man should just be stripped of his ability to speak on any broadcast. Morgan can't say a single thing without saying it four times - believe me, I know this intimately as he announces Giants games with the awesome Jon Miller. Morgan: See he didn't get that ball because it was low. [replay] The ball was low - you see that. Now on this replay, you see that throw was low to him that's reason he wasn't able to get that ball. Yes, we see - now shut it, SHUT IT. ................................................................................................................................................................................................................. Do you think of the Jackson Five when I write: 'One bad apple don't spoil the whole bunch, girrrrl. I don't care what they say, I don't caa-are what you heard'? This game. This pastoral game of strategy which is so hidden from the casual observer... this game is bigger than the people who abused it and used it as a tool for their lies. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, If Tampa or any team loses their players that is because the game is also a business. Please refer to the Florida Marlins (instead). Completely dismantled starting in 1997. Resurrected, returned, disbanded. Tampa is the team BS (Allen/Bud is so deserving of that nickname) wanted to eliminate. Colorado - in the 2007 WS but sucking this year with the same group. Cardinals struggling... The unpredictable - another reason I adore the game - any team can win on any day. Detroit - only .500 after attempting to match Steinbrenner's worst methods for success -- good, that makes me happy too! Cubbies (let's project) best team record but ousted in the playoffs for the year number 101 without. Could be a fan making a catch instead of a player, could be a bad series where they just don't come together. ........................................................................................................................................................................................... It's not that I don't believe you, but if you're in the same division as Yankmees and Sox - I follow/like the Orioles - well, you just have to wait for times to change. They will eventually, in my opinion. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, And, what the General said. To lose the bitter, you must attend to the purity. Shake off the users, look to the good. Stop reinforcing your innate negative by focusing on the positive and talking about it (instead) to cease the cynical. It will be work - but it can be done. ........................................................................................................................................................................................... When they showed BS I immediately wanted to choke him. Fucking idiot. I detest the absolute BS 'this game counts' - EVERY damn game counts to those who actually *play* the game. It's his utter BS that for some unfathomable reason he truly perverted the All Star game and still screws the players out of the fun they might have. .......................................................................................................................................................................................... You could easily have some of Josh's drug - apparently it's the power of the/his Lord and his savior Jesus Christ. All you gotta do is believe - it's that kind of game. I adore this game and accept it with it's flaws that are always being worked out. ............................................................................................................................................................................................ And yes, I detest the fact that they play God Bless America during the playing of my game - it's a separatist anthem that excludes people of other religions and agnostic/atheists and it does not belong in the game. At all. (And I am a Christian, that song in that venue reflects one of worse aspects of religion in this great country. It forces you and I resist. Go ahead give me some shit and I might ask, What - should I remove my cap if they play 'Born in the USA' as well? No. Please try to remember the song is just a separatist song, it is not our National anthem.) The number of people that sing it are not believable nor credible, I wager that 70% of those singing - or mouthing the words - do not pray or believe unless it's convenient - like after a car wreck or something. Hopefully they'll realize that and lose it someday - someday after BS is dead. |

| Oh, and I can only think of one stupid comment last night from McCarver that really stood out - there was a ball on the outside part of the plate which some batter swung and missed on. McCarver says "and that pitch tied him up on the hands" and then the replay shows that the ball is about a foot off the OUTSIDE part of the plate and the batter lunged after it. Dude...are you even watching the same game I am? |

My Fav Yankmee Stadium memory |
By Syl on

| June 2005. I was in attendance when the record for number of hits in Yankmee Stadium in ANY game by ANY team was broken by the Red Sox. They achieved 27 hits and dicked - oops, kicked the freakin' Dankmees ass. It was a joyous time, and that record will never be broken. |
