On Tuesday we took one step closer to officially joining the Cult of Mac by adding 2 iPhones to our roster of household Apple products. We had planned on getting the phones by year’s end but our hand was forced due to an application that we had trouble loading onto Megan’s Blackberry Pearl for work. Since it is an essential piece of software for her work (ePocrates) and even T-Mobile and Blackberry phone support couldn’t resolve the issue, we had to make the switch ASAP since we knew it worked on the iPhone.
Sure enough, after hours of futility on the Pearl, the application was installed flawlessly on her iPhone in less than 3 minutes and runs like a charm. As much as we both loved our Crackberries, the iPhone is simply a game-changer in the cell phone world. I know quite a few people now who own one (first and/or second generation) and not only has everyone liked their phone, every single person has RAVED about them. No one is neutral towards theirs or negative, which is a heckuva feat for any kind of software or phone.
In the 48 short hours I’ve had this phone, I must admit it is hands-down the coolest electronic device I have ever had. And it’s not just barely higher than some other cool things I have had, it’s head and shoulders above anything although the Wii does come in a solid second place in the Kirkpatrick household. Let’s say you have 3 voicemails and the third call is actually the one you want to hear first. Not a problem, just click on that name on your screen and you’re immediately taken to that voice message. Now I have a device that allows me to listen to all my music, takes my phone calls, displays video for me (great for plane trips), holds all my contact and calendar information, and still has tons of room left over for me to put cool applications and games on it?! Taking the cost out of the equation, who WOULDN’T want that? Oh, and I have a fully functional internet browser, GPS and Google Maps to boot.
I was reminded last night of why I’m so glad we became a Mac family last year as I was reinstalling Windows XP on a work laptop. An hour and a half later and I still hadn’t even gotten to putting Service Pack 3 on it, which is another 30+ minutes of installation.
To hell with that. Apple “gets it” in terms of the user experience. From the time I push my power button on the Macbook, it is fully booted and online in 30 seconds. The same functionality takes 3-4 minutes minimum on a Windows PC. With the exception of gaming and certain developer tools, anything Windows does Apple can do better. From the easier interfaces to the faster processing to the ninja-like quietness of my Macbook compared to a Windows-based laptop, there is nothing from Windows that I have missed since I made The Switch.
For those of you who like the comfort of the familiar and boring, then Windows is for you. But if you want to have a taste of what the much-more-fun world of Apple is like, treat yourself and get a Macbook or an iPhone. Go ahead, I dare you. |

James = iWhore. Having so much of your life wrapped up in that one electronic object frightens me. If I ever lost that I'd have a conniption.

Thankfully everything is backed up on the Macbook AND my external hard drive so if it ever did break or was lost, I wouldn't be dead in the water.

Ignorance is bliss for James. You have said nothing that a non-MAC can't do. Sometimes you have to take just a little bit of time to learn about your computer. Shut down that XP of yours using sleep and you will see your precious internet in 30 seconds. I hope you don't have to replace that toy phone of yours when the hard drive crashes or the battery doesn't hold a charge for more than your commute on a work-at-home day. I have been running my 17" Vista monster laptop for hours now and I haven't once heard the fan start up. It's probably even quieter and faster than that thing you call a computer. BTW. I could buy three of these laptops for the price of your fruitbook.

1 - I work in the IT world so it's not like I don't have a massive dose of Windows experience to draw from. OSX simply is the superior OS. 2 - Sure you could buy 3 cheap laptops, all running on 1GB which will get choked down with the lunky Vista. 3 - The next OSX version, Snow Leopard, will actually be HALF the size that Leopard is. Imagine that - an operating system more powerful than its predecessor and it actually takes up less space! 4 - I, too, was a Windows Automatron until I saw the light and actually was exposed to the Mac OS world. Come to the light, KB!

I don't know anything about the MACbook and am definitely not a big Windows guy. However, that stuff you talk about the Iphone doing could almost all be done with the last Treo I had (running the Mobile Windows). The big difference being the display wasn't as big and I couldn't do the "pick which VM I want to listen to first" thing. Those don't seem that great though. If I want to watch video on a plane I have my laptop, and it only takes a second to save/delete a VM and go to the next one. I have been fairly disappointed with the Pearl I bought. It's nice enough phone, better camera than the Treo, but it's not exactly easy to use. One example of this is the pictures. To send them off the Pearl to my 'puter I have to do it one at a time. Why can't I select multiple pics at once and send them on? I'd like to be able to clear the memory by just dumping all the pictures once in a while. Can't do it, and when the memory gets too full the "call log" feature doesn't work. Very annoying to not know who's call you missed. I'm actually thinking of going back to the Treo and just using the Pearl as my nice little portable camera. Except of course for the fact the Treo kind of sucks as an actual phone to, you know, talk on....

Murph, I noticed by chance that when I synch my iPhone, it plops all the photos immediately into iPhoto on my Macbook. I then can choose to either save them on the hard drive, and then keep them on the phone or delete them. Much more convenient than the Pearl (which I just had). Plus the camera's a tad better now. As for the movies on the plane, sure you can lug your laptop (or my my Macbook) but it's also convenient in close quarters to simply unholster your phone from your hip and watch it that way too.

"...a fully functional internet browser..." Ummm, not really, but you'll find that out. Since Stevie J. doesn't get along with a lot of people, some sites will give you a message along the lines of "this site is not configured for the iPhone."

Yeah, I should have specified "the most complete browser for a cell phone yet" as opposed to for a laptop or desktop. And yes, Safari doesn't render certain sites well. For instance, I'm stuck using IE to get the full functionality of posting a blog on this site. Even Firefox misses some of the functionality. And I typically use FF for any personal browsing.

It'd be so easy to be sucked into this Mac vs. PC squabble, but I refuse to. I have a XP PC & a Vista PC...but also an iPod. I'm not crazy about Vista... but you can't game on a Mac either...

Back in the day, my friends and I had the same argument. Well, except it was over land line phones about whether the IBM Selectric or the Royal Queen was the better typewriter. We had to type uphill - both ways! Punks.

It's a joke, right ? Saying you're "...one step closer to officially joining..." and then , "the Switch"? You've had the stain of the juice on your lips and it's just stronger/darker now. As you may be aware, not even Microsoft sells XP anymore - ha! Annyway It's good to like what you've bought. ............................................................................................................................................................................................... Have a good time, there's nothing wrong with new fun and functioning stuff, but still, proselytizing is so very common with macolytes - living in the Bay Area and all we see a lot of this - and it's usually less than attractive...It is truly 'cultish' in it's determination. Oooo, I like the terror of comfort and have now been branded boring - let me just run out an buy a iPhone right now. Sigh. [That last bit was sarcasm in case you can no longer recognize it.]

Why is it that every MAC convert has to pick up the "people who use Microsoft/PCs are all blind sheep" mantle? Is it written into some sort of contract that when you buy an Apple that you must then proselytize their virtues and denigrate the competition? I am an ardent PC guy - have built about 5 of my own now and am comfortable with how they work. Granted I am also a hardcore gamer, but I've seen the best Mac has to offer and I will agree that they are more user friendly if you are marketing to the LCD, but for me the old WIN OS works just fine for what I want to do.....

Yeah, I understand why people are fine with Windows but for my purposes and what I use a computer for, the Mac now makes a lot more sense. Of course, I only play games on the Wii but in terms of appealing to the LCD, I'd say that's more of a Windows/AOL thing than a Mac thing. Regardless, to each his own. But as of right now I have no plans to switch from Mac for my home use.

I'm by no means a computer guy, I think the Mac is cool and will most likely get one as a family computer soon, because I now also have an Iphone, and it beats the shit out of my blackberry! This is by far the coolest thing on earth, cooler still is the fact I find out something new everyday. I'm with you on this capn
