 First Day of Kindergarten Minimize

I’ll get back to being Cranky James later this week, I swear.  In the meantime, yesterday was a big milestone since it was my eldest daughter’s first day in kindergarten.  Maybe it was because I’ve been dropping her off at her Montessori class since she was 18 months old but the morning was tear-free, albeit one that Megan and I dreaded.  Your first child’s first day in real school is a huge milestone and you thank whatever deity/innate object you can that you have a) had a healthy child for that length and b) a child who is ready for school and looking forward to it.  Sadly, we also live in an age where I have to add part C – the hope that her schools are never ones where school violence happens as a result of disgruntled, heavily-armed psychopaths.

A parent’s wish is for their child to live a happy and normal life, albeit one that is successful as determined by the child when they are an adult.  You can only hope by that point you’ve steered them in the right direction and that they make the proper adult life decisions.  But I’m getting ahead of myself.  She’s only into her second day of school but I am bursting with pride as to how she is doing so far.  Her teacher seems to be really nice and it was comforting, during last week’s ice cream social, to see her former students (now first graders) all rush to say hello to her.  Had she been someone they didn’t like, I doubt they’d make their presence known to her.

I kind of wish yesterday hadn’t been Trash Day in Decatur, seeing that it kind of ruined what I thought was a perfect shot of Ally and Megan on our way to school.

Here she is just leaving the auditorium and headed to her classroom.  That's a My Pretty Pony tattoo on her left arm.  We don't think she's joined a gang...yet.

Classroom shot.  She's in the middle.

And a quick smiling photo when she got into our car after her triumphant first day.  Don’t worry, she was about to be buckled in and the ID necklace for first day kindergartners was about to be untangled from her neck.

Side note - When we tried to pry info out of her about how her first day was, she initially would only divulge that she had cheese pizza at lunch and that she was a good girl and chose white milk over chocolate milk.

I'll bypass my homeschool opinions, cross my fingers that her school isn't as bad as thousands of others, and wish her well. That auditorium/hallway photo is cool; it looks like she's in a movie's F/X time warp shot. And it was neat that you handed down your backpack to Ally. Nice tradition. Seriously, savor the moments and enjoy, Dad.

I remember taking white milk over chocolate milk- it was a whole penny cheaper- 7 cents versus 8 cents- and lunch was 45 cents- by third grade, I remember the teacher announcing it was going up to 50 cents. I can't imagine what school lunch is going for now. We never had ice cream social- I guess I should have gone to Montessori:) We never had pizza on Mondays, though. That was on Fridays- on Mondays, we had burgers every other week, rotated with chicken cutlet. Interesting how I remember the lunch menu, but lunch was always my favorite school activity! (And snow days!) Always amazed me how early school starts in the south. (Understandable to want to break before the June heat.) We were still at camp at this time. We began school the Wednesday after Labor Day.

The folks took a picture of us (four) kids on the front porch on the first day of school every single year. You should pick a spot and do the same thing - you will have a great series and also a lovely progression of photos.

General, thankfully the city of Decatur schools are head and shoulders above the rest of the county's schools. We do pay through the nose for it in the form of property taxes that are 3 times higher than the rest of the county. Ian, I think they gave pizza on the first day since that is a universally accepted kickass lunch entree. I'm sure they'll have pizza on Fridays going forward. Lunch is $1.75 plus 50 cents for milk. Ally never has had choco milk in our house, that's a luxury she gets when she goes to her auntie's. Syl, we actually had a choco milk option even when I was a grade schooler (early-mid 80s). I always picked white then too, believe it or not. Erich was actually kind enough to Photoshop the trash away and I might post the edited photo later.

Ian, here is something I wrote a while ago on the early school start down here. In Michigan, we always started the Monday after Labor Day. http://kirkpatrick.daktarbi.com/direct_link.cfm?bid=36B1434F-7B9F-45C3-BBB75F0B8D53205A I do like the fact that her school is an older design and not one of the newer soulless buildings they've built around metro Atlanta in the past decade.
