Audience Participation - Burning House edition Minimize

User participation seems to be a fun trend on this blog so let’s have another stab at it today. Based on a topic submitted by my favorite General, answer the following. Assume your house is on fire but your family and pets are safe outside. You have two minutes to grab what you can in your hands (only one trip though – the house is about to cave in). What do you grab?

Yours truly would try to get the following items (in order of importance):

 • The folder containing our SSN cards, birth certificates, passports, and other official documentation.
 • My iPod and iPhone. Thankfully this wonderful little invention spares me from trying to lug 700+ CDs from a burning house.
 • The backup hard drive which contains all the digital photos I’ve taken.
 • MacBook
 • Any other additional older photo books I could manage to fit in my arms.

There might be other things I’d think of later, but when your brain has no time to process other thoughts, these would be the items I would attempt to salvage.

Our wallets and our laptops ... which basically give us access to all the things you've listed. Everything else is optional, as I've been discovering all over again as we prepare to move.

1) Computer - I live on the thing 2) the box w/ my most expensive baseball cards in it (Bench rookie, Mantle 68', and many others) 3) My nude pictures of Earnest Borgnine - honestly I don't own much else that couldn't be replaced

Laptop, photo album (our child was pre-digital), baseball cards like Erich, and my two favorite handguns, because some sumbitch is gonna pay for burning down my house.

Years ago, after undergrad in Peoria, I did have a fire in the apartment I was living in. Not much I wish I took out, except the smokin' pipes that my mom/husband found. It seems insignificant now, but at the time, I wish I had any old Delt shirt...

But now, the laptop, regular photos, pillow, the nude oil paintings of Erich and James together (you know, the ones that look like Elvis), and the insurance contact info.

NEVER, I repeat NEVER go back into a burning building. The National President of Sig Tau died doing that.

We have a fire-proof safe, James. A few hundred bucks and your passports/SS Cards/birth certificates/deeds/wills are no longer a worry. Neither are our most irreplaceable baseball cards or the rings my mom gave to me (hers and my grandmother's). .......................................................................................................................................................................................................................... So my phone and the previous one, too (I've only got the info from A to J out of the old one). The photo albums, my pre-electronic written archive address book, the laptop. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................... No one can face off on a fire and win - the SMOKE alone will kill you. (Our families' house was rebuilt on the side - fire in the kitchen before I was born.) Also - be very careful if you're going to try to save the person who is drowning...
