Wow.  I did it.  In this day and age of internet spoilers and other media talking about the ending to the last Harry Potter book the week it came out, I managed to somehow submerge myself into an information blackout until I finished the book.  I still can’t believe I didn’t inadvertently hear about the ending although some radio shows sure tried over the course of the past year.  I would quickly switch the station when there was any mention of the book.  I even avoided reading synopses of the latest movie in production in case I read some throwaway sentence regarding the ending of the movies yet to be made.

I finally finished the 759 page book last night and have to say the ending was satisfying to me.  I refuse to talk about it and I hope no one mentions the outcome in their comments in case others who want to read the book still haven’t done so.  Having read all seven over the course of the past few years, it would have been extremely disappointing to know how it all ended – something that happened to me when the sixth book came out.

I’ve talked about the Harry Potter phenomena before and wanted to give one last round of kudos to JK Rowling and her ability to create a series that is entertaining to young and old alike.  Even more impressive is her ability to make kids clamour for books that are all the thickness of a phone book!

I only got to page 70 of Sorcerer's Stone. I put it down so long ago, that I basically have to start it over again... But something else has been keeping me busy: I started writing my own novel. Hopefully if I ever get it finished (and published)...and have 1% of JK's success, I'd be happy!

Sorry about the spoiler here... The ending reveals that Dumbeldore is actually Voldemort. HeHe

"Clamour"? Man, you have been reading way too much British stuff lately. When you come back from the next Comic Book/Fantasy convention, please don't blog in Klingon... I couldn't get into the Harry Potter books, but my wife and son read them all and I second the kudos for getting kids - and namby-pamby quasi-metrosexuals - reading again. Now I must go get some bangers.

Books are cool, man. Reading is the bomb... I used to sneak read with a flashlight under the covers - until I got caught. One of my favorite my mom stories:. The librarian at the Yelm (population 560 at the time) Public Library refused to let me check out a 'J' or a 'Junior' book because I "wouldn't be able to understand it". It may have been about horses or something. When I told mom about this disappointing event we went immediately back to the library and these words stuck with me. "This child is allowed to check out ANY BOOK she want to in this library, ANY book at all. There is no book here that she may not check out." I must now go read. Or write...wait...um. Books are cool, mmm'kay?

I thought the last book was a little anti-climactic. But I guess that was inevitable with the long build up. While JK got a little too much credit considering she took much of her stuff from old mythology, she does deserve kudos for writing engaging books that both kids (my son was 8 when he read all of them) and their parents could both enjoy. .................................................................................................................................................................................... Although it was rather awkward having to explain why Harry had to "service" Dumbledore weekly in order to graduate. I was surprised at how graphic she wrote those scenes as well. I think we all could have lived without knowing an old man's testicular fortitude. Just sayin is all ...

Totally forgot to mention that, while I did enjoy the book, it could have used about 150 pages of editing. Around page 500 my mind started to wander for a few superfluous chapters.
