The Underrated Autumnal Equinox

Maybe part of it is my adverse reaction to the life-draining hotness of summers in the south but I’ve come to relish autumn as much as any other season. Some of you know which of the four seasons my favorite is, and while spring and summer have their strong points, I’m beginning to lean towards autumn as being my second favorite season. Here are my reasons behind being a fan of a season that most people dread.
First and foremost is the bounty from nature. From fresh veggies to fruit to newly harvested grains, this is when food is the best. Is there anything better than going to a farm that presses fresh apple cider right there on the spot? I’m salivating just thinking about it – hot or warm, it doesn’t matter. With the colder months approaching, food gets heartier and more “comfort food-like”. Sure, the food might be a tad unhealthier but something like a shepherd’s pie on a cool autumn night seems to be a perfect marriage of food and season.
It’s also the beginning of breweries releasing their really tasty seasonal beers. The Octoberfest and pumpkin and autumn-inspired beers seasoned with nutmeg and cinnamon and other great flavors pave the way for the even-better holiday beers. This time of year is when a brewery can really stand out from the pack with their beers that overflow with flavor.
While we’re on the topic of edibles, does anything tip off that it’s fall than seeing bags of candy corn available in every store you see? It’s this time of year when I start eating fistfuls of those diabetes-inducing isoscoles triangles of fun.
For the sports nut, this is the time of year when the perfect storm of events comes together – football, baseball playoffs, and hockey. While I’ve been turned off from college football thanks to the beyond-fanaticism of SEC and ACC fans, it’s fun to see a game on a sunny, 45 degree day up north with 100,000 fans who all share your passion. And for those wannabe Canadians like myself, hockey season is officially underway!
I don’t know about your personal preferences, but as someone who walks several miles a day, I prefer crisp, colder air that doesn’t make me sweat while getting my heart rate up is a nice bonus to the season.
And, of course, it isn’t Fall without the vibrant colors of the leaves. Who doesn’t like staring out your window and seeing red, orange, yellow and green splashed out over the landscape?
Autumn is where it’s at, man. |

| I agree with Lewis Black - he theorized that all of the Candy Corn in existence was created back in the 1930's and it's the same stuff recycled year after year and they go through your trash after Halloween and take it out for next year cuz no one eats that stuff. Though I disagree, I used to stick them on my canine teeth and pretend I was a vampire....guess that explains the diabetes huh? |

| As someone who grew up on a street named 'Autumn', I'm come to enjoy the fall as my favorite season. Sunny, but cool, crisp and dry days with those rainbows-esc leaves blowing around in a slight breeze are a feast for the eye and soul. Nothing beats hiking or biking through fall foliage...anywhere in upstate NY, New England...especially Maine. As for candy corn...I've eaten 3 bags already! This October will be a bit depressing, cuz the Yankees won't be around. (Hold yer cracks, Erich.) At least I can look forward to the Giants and Jets winning some games this season... |

| Hey JD - you should hook up with that other JD guy. It sounds like you two have so much in common! You're right, autumn does have a lot going for it, James. Erich: I used to do that tooth thing with the candy corn, too - and I'm diabetic! I think you found the answer. I see a future article in the New England Journal of Medicine for you. Or at least 5 minutes with Heidi Watney before the next game. Mmm, five minutes with Heidi Watney.... |

| I'm not sure why, but Murph's cranky response to this post was actually on Monday's post. Either there's a bug in the software or Murph's just a senile old coot. Here was his comment "Fall sucks, and I'm tired of hearing people say it's their favorite season. I swear it's like trendy thing to say. Stop any yuppie on the street while they're walking their daily couple miles and ask them their favorite season. I got 20 clams that says the majority answer "fall". In the northern half of the country how can anyone like this awful season better than summer or spring? Hell even winter had it's charm when the blanket of snow is covering everything. Nothing like the silence of a late night snowfall. Not to mention seeing the kinder's faces on Greedmas. Why is fall so great?? Everything's dying, yeah! The weather's going from 80 degree highs to 50 degree highs, yeah! The women are switching from exposing every legal inch of their body to covering up every inch of epidermis they can, yeah! The birds are going away for 6 months, yeah! Darkness now overpowers daylight in it's march towards 4 o'clock sunsets, yeah let's hear it for the victory of dark over light! ............................................................................................................
My wife was the first person I ever heard say Fall is her favorite season, so I relish telling her it's her favorite time of year when the first sleet hit the ground. Other than that the only cool thing about fall is Halloween. I'm not a fan of sickeningly sweet candy corn either, give me dark chocolate anything, any time. Although I did the vampire thing as a kid too. I'm pretty sure everyone in the 70s did that, at least until they were old enough to get drunk and high. Then they just ate handfuls of the junk at a time. ...................................................................................... Oh I did forget one other favorite part of fall recently: Watching the Cubs choke. YEAH!!!!!!!!" |

| James, why do you say that it's a season most people dread? I feel the way you do, and agree with your assessment above. |

| Falls sucks. Falls sucks out loud. That's right, I said it. Baseball season ends, there's no light anymore and James - perhaps you like the fall merely because the summer where you live it too damn hot for humans?! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You want fruit? Fall is for (love them) apples and wheat. Where are the cantaloupe and strawberries (local) and the raspberries and cherries and so on? Ther trees are pretty, but I love the trees year-round and truly enjoy their bounty (and hello, my garden and flowers!) in the Spring and Summer. Fall. Not my fav, not even close... The flood of sugar-high in the stores and inside the children...not great. I do like Halloween too, but it alone cannot make up for three months of suckage.

|
