Seasoned Veteran, or Middle-Aged Putz? Minimize

I have ranted on how age is quickly creeping up on my generation.  While in college, it was odd to see “up and coming superstars” who were my age splash onto the scene for any sport.  They were in the process of making millions while I was still making pyramids with beer cans and balancing my checkbook down to the last 7 cents.  It was at this time when I had a fraternity brother write a check for me for 16 cents to Columbia House (one of the few times I actually paid that company) since I didn’t have that much in my account.

Now it’s disconcerting to see guys my age or slightly older in professional sports that are now either retired or are referred to as “seasoned veterans”.  This is the age range where they start commending players on how well they use their smarts since their physical skills and speed have diminished.

Heck, someone my age is now the mayor of Pittsburgh.  Thankfully his age for that job is considered “unusually young” rather than “an elder statesman”.  I still feel young and for those who comment on my “bald spot” and “high forehead”, someone who reads this blog who was in high school with me can confirm I had the same amount of hair back then.  With my hair changing colors from a towhead as a kid to now a dark blonde, when the white hairs start a-comin’, they’ll stand out but not as bad as if I had black hair.  What I don’t know, if my hair begins to look like a friar's decades from now, is whether to let it grow or shave the whole thing.  The problem is that I think that a bald head plus my large nose will make me resemble the bow of an Arctic ice-breaking ship were you to view my profile from the side.

As of next July though, I will have vacated that lucrative 18-34 demographic that advertisers love so much.  Maybe I’ll be bombarded with less ads?  Fat chance of that ever happening.

Don't worry James, with the baby-boomers shifting the average age in America, the 35-54 is the new 18-34.

the Middle-Aged Putz, of course    By Syl on 9/29/2006 12:00 PM
That's nealry what I was going to say. But I was going with the 29-49 year old people. That's still in *my* age range... Ha!

Confirmation - James did have the same volume of hair in high school. In fact he may have even tried a comb-over during our junior year, but nobody said anything due to the mere shock of it all....

"As of next July though, I will have vacated that lucrative 18-34 demographic that advertisers love so much. Maybe I’ll be bombarded with less ads?"

I can tell you what happens (being there already) you don't get less ads, just ads for different products, like Viagra instead of Miller Lite.

"someone who reads this blog who was in high school with me can confirm I had the same amount of hair back then."
I'm also a memebr of the high forehead club and the amount of hair hasn't changed since I was 15.
Have a lif ong frien who's definitely thinning, who keeps insisting that I'm going bald too, pointing to the firhead and teh scalp you can see when I get a buzz cut. Sad really to hear his pathetic attempts to drag me down with him. BTW, I do admit to getting the grays now, butluckily they tend to blend in with my maginificent red mane.

"The problem is that I think that a bald head plus my large nose will make me resemble the bow of an Arctic ice-breaking ship were you to view my profile from the side." Actually I kind of picture you looking like Wimpy from the Popeye cartoons when you're 60 or so.

You think your Scottish ass is pale blue? There is nothing sadder than a pale-skinned white guy who shaves his head. You don't realize it now, but your scalp is fish-belly white. Go bald gradually so that your scalp can acquire some color.

And maintain hope that your lengthening ear hair is colorless...

"The problem is that I think that a bald head plus my large nose will make me resemble the bow of an Arctic ice-breaking ship were you to view my profile from the side." And we know that if they ever need an ice-breaking ship in Canada (Or Joe Louis Arena), you are so there!

As for age, what makes me feel really old is watching sports stars who are the SONS of the stars I used to enjoy watching (Jared Payton, Gary Matthews Jr., Tatupu, etc.)

And Trey, thank youf or making me feel better about turning 35.

I went to high school with Donnell Woolford who went on to play pro football for Chicago Bears. He has been retired for 10 years!!! Damn do I feel old! (Donnell Woolford - # 21 - CB - 1989-1996)

Get over yourself Putz!

You're old, blading, and look like shit every growing day just like the rest of us.. Besides. The sooner you go bald the sooner you can quit torturing us with that mullet cut!!

Where is the mullet reference coming from? Haven't had one of those since sophomore year in college. And it was Hockey Hair, thankyouvery much AKA a Canadian Passport.
