Counting Sheep, need to sleep, not a peep, thinking too deep

Either I’m gonna have to give up my policy of trying not to go to sleep with pills (drowsy cold meds or knock-you-out-cold prescription stuff like ambien) or I’m gonna have to find a new way to fall asleep. As a kid it would sometimes take several hours for me to fall asleep. Part of the issue at that point in my life was my mind was always racing. The other aspect was I had to also keep an eye out on the Bogeyman and whatever creepy crawly creatures resided under my bed, plotting my imminent demise.
Taking forever to sleep almost always was the case all the way through college, excluding the alcohol-induced sleeps during that 4 ½ year period of body abuse. It wasn’t until a few years into my life with Megan that I think my mind finally relaxed and was able to fall asleep like a normal person.
One thing I eventually realized was that, while I preferred to lay on my stomach as a kid because that was the most comfortable position, it also didn’t allow me to fall asleep for whatever reason. It turns out that lying on my back facilitated falling asleep a lot easier.
Until a few months ago.
Who knows if it’s because of age, dementia, global warming, too much caffeine (although I rarely have any in the afternoon even though that’s when I need it most) or something else but now all of a sudden I’m left with two options if I want to fall asleep. I need to lay on my right side or left side. Of course an inherent problem with that is if I wind up staying in that position, then I get the “pins and needles” effect if blood flow gets restricted to that part of the arm. Now both girls, for once, are finally sleeping through the night yet I still can’t drift into Neverland until the early morning. Is it worth it to just watch TV and catch up with what’s on my DVR or continue to hope this is just some stupid phase?
The most annoying part of this whole scenario? Realizing that I’m veering dangerously into Boring Old Person Mode by talking about my maladies. Maybe getting discussions like this out there will prep me for the eventual move into the old folks’ home where I can look forward to Mashed Potato Wednesdays and Stay Awake Until 7 PM Fridays. |

I give you 2 months until you are talking to yourself in front of the TV watching channel 3... At that point the blog posts will really start getting good.

I heartily recommend "Cashback". Ever see it? Wow. Or there's always "Insomnia". "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", or "Crank". I think the longest I ever stayed up was 69 hours straight during start-up at a plant. That's a nice mix - nuclear power and walking zombies. There are regulations now to prevent that kinda thing, but back in the day... Jolt Cola to the rescue.

Aah, a fellow insomniac! Who knew? I concur that you ought to start writing your blogs when you're up in the middle of the night. Those rambling s will be quite entertaining I'm sure. Plus if you blog about whatever's in your head you may find it's gone and sleep comes to you. .............................;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; I'm probably not he best person to give advice here, as I've been fighting this battle for 40+ years now. But here's a couple of things I have found helps; Reading a novel. I always try to be reading something and getting to sleep ins the main reason why. Have to read it IN bed though, getting up and going upstairs wakes me up (yeah that's MY version of Hell). Stretching, in case you're suffering from restless legs syndrome, which I may or may not have, but I know sometimes stretching the old pins out at bedtime helps get rid of the twitches. Put he new age music channel on the TV with the sleep timer. Only problem with this is a sometimes the music is just too weird and not relaxing and b) there are times I fall asleep and then wake up before the music's off and I find myself wondering if set the sleep timer at all(don't ask). Lastly, and this so far is the best method yet, find "How It's Made" on one of the Discovery channels. It's almost always on around my sleepy na-nas time, I swear that's by design. Something about that guy's voice and the subject matter (just interesting enough to keep your mind from wandering, not exciting enough to keep you awake) is perfect for dozing off. I think they know it's sleep inducing and get the best ratings for that show around 11/12 at night. ................................................................................................... So give those a try; and pray that you don't develop my latest trick, waking up at 4 for no apparent reason and not being able to go back to sleep. I believe this is a "40s and over" curse.

That's why I rely on pharmaceuticals. Chronic insomnia sucks.

Once I fall asleep, I'm good. It's just getting to that point is where I'm falling short. If I wake up in the middle of the night, I fall back asleep almost immediately.

I always assumed it was "Boogeyman" but I've never seen it spelled like that and have adopted what I consider to be the grammatically incorrect "Bogeyman". Perhaps it's a golfing conspiracy.<br>

When you get to be really old, you'll sleep like a baby -- wake up every two hours to pee.

I refuse to let these comments end with that awful one above me. ............................................................................................................................................................................................................... Muuurrph, my body seems to prefer the 3:45 AM self-wake up activity. I have always woken up early and it's very common for me to be up at 5:30 or 6 (I never use an alarm, it's not needed no matter what time I have to get up). If I go to bed earlier than usual because I'm 'tired', I wake up at 3 AM instead. That perky 'How it's Made" music is too perky for snoozing. Sadly, I saw the bulk of Delta Force the other night - I don't think I've ever actually watched it. Wow, it's really bad with a heavy touch of racist tossed in...now *that's* a sleep/snooze movie.

Damn, I wish I had your problems. I don't have enough time in the day to do all the things I want/need to do. If I could be up at night, with everyone asleep, I could really get some things done. A pile of trade magazines to catch up on, books to read, website to redo, perhaps even watch an episode of The Office on Hulu...
