Yep, I’m doing it again.  I know, I know, the last time I did this it was about a month and I was right back into blogging again.  I can’t guarantee that I might or might not do that in the near future but for now I figured what I’ve written since 2005 (3-5 times a week) was a good snapshot into my life.  Obviously there are things I don’t put out for public consumption since I always have to assume my employer and future employers will scan anything I’ve put out there and use it against me and never for me.  When I reference future employers I’m not implying I have a new job, nor have I interviewed for any.  I’m just saying that in today’s Facebook/MySpace/Twitter world, anything you post could have ramifications down the line.

One thing that I wanted to do when I installed Google Analytics on this blog last year was to see what states and countries were hitting the site.  I half-heartedly joked to myself that once all 50 states had perused the site at least once that it would be time to place the site to rest.  Interestingly enough, the only state that hasn’t sent a request to the site (on purpose or inadvertently) was South Dakota.  So to heck with you, South Dakota!  I’m turning out the lights and not waiting for your call.

Blogging’s a tricky business.  While it gives any schmoe an outlet to express their opinions or to spread news around, very few people do it properly.  I do like how it keeps entities like the government and the standard media outlets in check, calling them out on inaccuracies or flat-out lies, but there is a seedy underbelly to it too where unchecked rumors can ruin people and there’s nothing a public figure can do about it.  I compare blogging to Las Vegas – it represents all that is right and also all that is wrong with the world today.

The fact remains that when I initially expounded on semi-lucid rants and random life occurrences, I wanted to keep family stories out of the site.  What happened though is all I really care about at this point are my two precious daughters and awesome wife.  What doesn’t need to happen is me putting their life out there for all to review.  Since that’s all I seem to concentrate on and care about in this stage in my life, there’s no sense maintaining a site to give updates on mundane family life.  This isn’t an attack on those who have blogs about family life, as there are a few sites that I love reading their updates.  It’s just that I don’t want to do it and since my inspiration to write lately is all about family, I’m gonna keep those entries offline.

I really want to thank my blog host who, in addition to providing me with a place to host the site also was the one to purchase this URL for me and keeps renewing it.  He didn’t have to do that but has done so all these years out of the goodness of his heart and I appreciate all he’s done for me.  I’m also extremely thankful to all those who post comments and keep me in check.  For those of you who lurk and read only, I’m amazed at just how far this blog spread and for that I’m grateful for you reading it too.  One thing that’s become obvious is I’m in the wrong freakin’ profession!  I have printed out my output for the past 4 years and the manuscript is almost 6 inches thick.  And that’s from only writing for 5-10 minutes a day, usually during my lunch break.

Again, this doesn’t mean I’m done writing online but if I do revive my passion, it will be good to change the focus on what and how I write about things.  In the meantime, I’ll be actively updating my Twitter and Facebook feeds (see the links on the lower right) and anyone can still email me using the Contact Me box (also on the lower right corner of the site).

Adios, amigos.  Let’s all hope the next time you’ll see me writing online it will be when we’re based in an area of the country that has one or more of their sports teams that are named after the Ursidae family (Yes, that’s a hint and there are several possibilities, none of which I will confirm or deny).

It’s been fun.

Re: A good 4 years    By Donna on 11/17/2008 11:50 PM
I wish I could take credit for reading all four years but....I have two plus under my belt. I respect you even more for your current passion and can relate more than words could ever express. Bowing out now doesn't mean you are quitting, it simply means you are taking a break. Your children will grow and move out on their own. You will be more than willing to share those stories under a name known only to you. HAHA. Those of us that 'know' you can say that 'You'll be back", in some form or another. For the record, you have been entertaining, irratating, silly, ridiculous, spot-on, too true to repeat in public, out right hilarious, and actually made me re-think my approach to a subject (never want to admit that, but since you are quitting, hey, gotta say the unspeakable). I will miss Erich, Meatball, General, Sly, Deanna, JD, KB and Jason's Mom. Hope to meet again. Love ya all! - - - - Thanks for all that you have written, James. Keep in touch.

Muuurph, I'll miss you too....

Re: A good 4 years    By Muuurph on 11/18/2008 10:07 AM
Thanks Donna. I can stop crying now I guess. --- In all deference to James entertaining blogs, the comments here are as good as the blogs. How about making this a "wiki-blog"? Open up the access and let anyone post anything that trips their fancy, irritates them, makes them wonder? Then we can all make comments on that subject, with the requisite references to James' dorkiness and gayness of course.

Lifted from a place I use regularly as a snarky (reposted by anyone as needed) farewell post:<br><br>hey guys, i'm leaving [this blog]. i don't want to make a big deal of it and i don't want to start a bunch of rumors, it's just that i really wanted attention and i'm not getting enough. so please, don't ask me about it. i'm just going to go. quietly. have fun everyone. i know you won't miss me. but if you do, email me in the next 5 minutes before i have [administrators] take down my account. somebody threatened to sue me for a review (for things we wrote on talk). well, of course they don't know who i am and there's no way they could actually sue me. i just don't want the drama. so i'm leaving. forever. that's right. you won't have me to kick around anymore. it's just that my new job won't let me yelp. so i have to go. and take down every review i ever wrote. of course i don't have a new job, but i'm sure if i did they'd want me to give it up. and i'm just sick of the drama. [bloggin] has changed... it isn't what i joined for. i just want to write and be appreciated. but i'm not. so i'm going. quietly going. yup, that's me, hitting the road, deleting my reviews, taking down my account, quietly. just with this one thread (review) announcing it to the world. goodbye cruel world. no more drama. starting...... now!<br>

Re: A good 4 years    By Syl on 11/19/2008 10:52 AM
More seriously James, I now anticipate another email group that crosses over to feed our humble needs to post smart ass and sometimes helpful responses. It feels like -or I anticipate this feeling coming on - I've now left the neighborhood and am heading for the airport to go home after a lovely sharing visit with you and the family. Oh sure, we'll write, but I won't be there sitting around the house with a grin pasted on watching a certain Guitar Hero-to-his-girls perform, witnessing the kids grow and I will miss that certain closeness that comes with daily sharing... ...................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Take that line break <br>, (not)! Don't be a stranger now that we all have sort of confessed in our own way(s) that we like you. ...................................................................................................................................................................................................................... How will people be able to clearly mock me -yes, I'm talking to each one of you reading - unless you make us an email circle (I'm intentionally leaving out the word 'jerk' here) group and send us a little somethin' somethin' now and then. ..................................................................................................................................................................................................... Yep, love you James, I like your friends a bunch too (thanks Donna, have you ever mocked me directly and why the heck not?!) and don't want to looooser them either. It's still on you...big contact man - make me feel better, go ahead Do it. Do it. DO IT!! Go off-live-line with us, won't you?

Re: A good clearance    By It has the letters to 'silly' almost built in... on 11/20/2008 10:35 AM
I'm confused about KB's line break reference - ummmm, what did it sound like...? (Hee!) That was a air/mucous snort, additionally containing only loo-ove and sweet-eeeee e-moooooooooo-tion - all of that and still with *zero* calories!

A funny story    By Donna on 11/20/2008 11:44 PM
As you know, or maybe not, my honey is a deep seeded Green Bay fan. I know, I know.... But I'm not perfect either. Any way. He doesn't purchase anything representing a current player. When Farve retired, I got him a 'fathead' for the game room. You can check out the website, if you are not familiar with a 'fathead'. (www.fathead.com) Any who. He was pissed when Farve did the 'retire, no, I want to play, no wait, I want to retire, ,,,' All the damn drama did not set well in our house. NOT THAT I FREAKIN CARED. But love does funny things, right? I asked my honey if we were going to take down the fathead of Farve now that he is playing for someone else. I didn't really get an answer so I took things into my own hands. We were cleaning the carpet one Saturday and I heard a grown man cry from across the 1,000 foot room. "WHAT THE HELL". Trying to contain myself and pretend that I have no freakin clue why he would be yelling out like that.... I walked over and saw him looking at the wall where the fathead displayed. I said, "Oh man. Look. Farve lost his balls. Who would do a thing like that?" I had cut a hole in the picture tracing the cup in his crotch. In our house, Farve has no balls. Needless to say, I began to laugh my ass off. LOL. Hilarious. My honey took down the picture before my daughter came home from a weekend trip. LOL. . . Bears Rock!!

Re: A good 4 years    By Muuurph on 12/3/2008 3:18 PM
I keep clicking on this site out of habit (part of the morning and lunch time ritual). Here's something to discuss; how old are kids when they stop believing in the guy in the red suit? My 9 year old has made a few comments that has me suspect he's not completely buying the whole thing anymore. We were on the roof putting lights up and he looked at the chimney and said "How the heck can Santa get down that"? I just said "I don't know, some kind of magic I guess, all I know is the presents are there on Christmas morning somehow". I don't recall at all my moment of enlightenment, but having 3 older siblings, I'm guessing mine was earlier than most anyway. Anyone have an over/under on the age the kids stop believing?

Re: A good 4 years    By James on 12/3/2008 3:23 PM
As Steve Perry sang so eloquently in the last episode of The Sopranos "Don't stop...believin'" Thankfully we can get some extra good behavior out of Ally this time of year under the guise of Santa watching. Good or bad parenting? Fuck it - it works!

Nothing really to say, just announcing that Today's my birthday. ........................................................................................................ // Real purpose of this comment is to make James come here and look. Santa ?    By Donna on 12/7/2008 8:59 PM
My children (20, 18, 12 years old) still make reference to the man in red during the holidays. I think by nine they knew but didn't have the heart to tell me. I enjoy giving gifts as if I didn't know they wanted them. Now that they are older I'm having a hard time just giving them money and calling it a day. I would like to think that I know them well enough to get a gift they would enjoy. I still give money because they don't want me picking out their clothes. Something about 'not having good taste in clothes'. <shrug> Just my two cents, Muuurph. And to James' point, I used it to make them behave for as long as it would work!!! Same with Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy. BTW, the Tooth Fairy is WAY too expensive! Glad my kids have lost thier baby teeth.

Re: A good 7.5 years    By Syl on 12/8/2008 11:42 AM
Oh I remember distinctly that December morning when my third grade teacher made the comment, "Of course we all know that Santa doesn't exist" before a Santa came to visit the class. Not a good day for that eight year old Syl - obviously, I will never forget it. (Or I already would have, hee!)

Re: A good 4 years    By Erich on 12/8/2008 1:46 PM
When I was 6-7 an older kid in the neighborhood told me that Santa wasn't real and that it was my parents, then I went home and told my mom. She panicked and asked "well, what do you think?" and I told her that I knew he was lying because whenever we went to the store and I asked for a toy that they told me no. :)

You know, now that I think about it, she was the only teacher who ever gave me a hard time for helping other students with vocabulary/words after I had already completed the in-class reading assignment. She complained that I was "talking". She's dead now. [line break] <grin>

Re: A good vacation    By Syl on 12/17/2008 11:30 AM
When we stayed in Puerto Vallarta one year, we stayed at a place that their private beach has a declared (sea turtlle's) beach sanctuary. The workers would go out at night find and relocate the tortuga's nests into a protected fenced area. Later, we paid a small donation to release a couple of the tiny guys into the Pacific- they fit on the palm of your hand and scuttled straight for the water. We (about 50-60 guests at the hotel) released them at night - fewer predators - and their chances of survival due to the weeks of protection were hugely increased. It was very cool releasing those tortugitas.

Re: A good 4 years    By The General on 12/17/2008 6:51 PM
Syl, you bleeding heart liberal tree-huggers make me so mad! Who are you to play Turtle Goddess and mess with The Natural Order of Things? Have you never heard of the Butterfly Effect? First the workers move them from the nests the turtles worked so hard to make, then you sneak the little ones out by cover of night past their predators. Sharks can't find little turtles to eat so they have to hunt other prey closer to shore... Meatball, intrigued by the thought of yummy Mexican turtle soup, convinces Erich to join him on vacation in Puerta Vallarta... Erich, confused that the ocean is on the wrong side, dazedly wanders out past the safe point and gets eaten by a shark... Me, despondent that Erich's death leaves a vacancy as commissioner in our fantasy baseball league, tries to step in and fill the void. Distracted by Pete's inability to stop drafting players that are already on other guy's teams, I lose focus at my position at a nuclear power plant and instigate a core meltdown... Please consider the ramifications of your actions, people!

Re: A good 4 years    By Deanna on 12/17/2008 7:26 PM

I mean, I've never used this entry before and it would work, right? Damn it James!! I can't use the "James Time" any longer because I'm now reading shit from your friends. PLEASE. No more. PLEASE. <dry humor... come on.... just kidding.... (about the friends writing shit part, not about anything else)>
