I’m going to break my self-imposed blog rule today to talk about not only religion but also politics. I do find extreme satisfaction in seeing yet another “Christian” pastor be caught up with a hidden sex and drug lifestyle. To be honest, I feel sorry for the guy, having had lived a double lifestyle for what sounds like a long time. Meth is a horribly addictive drug and I don’t buy his explanation that he didn’t use it. This is even less credible than Clinton’s “I didn’t inhale” fiasco. It’s why I commend Barack Obama for admitting that he dabbled in hard drugs as a teen, unlike our current War Lord In Charge who never did fess up to snorting the Texas Booger Sugar.
Back to the pious preacher who just happened to suck other men’s dicks while strung out on crank, what gets me is that I’m sure in many of his sermons to his 14,000+ congregation, he railed against drug use and homosexuality. The fact that people still trust “men of the cloth”, from the ball-fondling Catholic priests to the embezzling TV evangelists to the current Fallen Angel Du Jour is amazing to me. It’s OK to be human and suffer pitfalls but it’s frustrating to see religious and political leaders who have just as many human bodies in their closet (I won’t call them skeletons if it pertains to something they’re previously doing, as opposed to something they did in the past) point the finger at others and be judgmental of others lifestyles, all the meanwhile living the same damn lifestyle in private.
Whether or not you like Metallica, one area where James Hetfield’s lyrics have been consistent is his criticism of preachers like this. One of their songs is called “Leper Messiah” and I’ve included some lyrics that are extremely topical. Keep in mind the Master of Puppets album came out in 1983, yet it’s as current as ever.
Spineless from the start, Sucked into the part
Circus comes to town, You play the lead clown
Please, Please, Spreading his disease
Living by his story
Knees, Knees, Falling to your knees
Suffer for his glory
You will
[chorus]
Time for lust, Time for lie
Time to kiss your life goodbye
Send me money, Send me green
Heaven you will meet
Make a contribution and you’ll get a better seat
Bow to Leper Messiah
Marvel at his tricks, See your Sunday fix
Blind devotion came, Rotting your brain
Chain, Chain, Join the endless chain
Taken by his glamour
Fame, Fame, Infection is the game
Stinking drunk with power
We see
Witchery, Weakening
Sees the sheep are gathering
Set the trap, Hypnotize
Now you follow
**********
I hate to bring up conspiracy theories but this current administration gives me no reason to trust them. It’s been discussed before how gas prices were conveniently lowered a few months before the election in order to give the Democrats one less piece of ammunition against the Republicans. I won't buy any argument that OPEC doesn't have a vested interest in who is in office here in America.
Now that we’re one day away from what appears to be a Democratic takeover of the House, we conveniently see that the Saddam Hussein trial just HAPPENED to be given a death penalty verdict 2 days before the election. I don’t care what side of the fence you’re on – this is NOT a coincidence. Sadly, the dumber segment of our voting population will go to the polls tomorrow thinking that now that Saddam is going to die, we must be winning the War On Terror (and Liquids and Personal Freedoms and a Balanced Budget), therefore they’ll continue to vote for a party that doesn’t serve their best interests. |

Unfortunately, almost any religious leader you see in the news is almost guaranteed to be some form of scumbag. You have to realize we don't ever find out about the majority of their sins. I think the guy who blew the whistle (among other things) on the preacher man did so because he couldn't believe Mr Pious was one of the leading forces behind the movement against same sex marriage. it's amazing that even male prostitute/drug dealers some times have to act because they have a conscience. While at the same time, people at the bully pulpit who claim to be acting in the name of God (whichever version they are preaching) seem to have none. I believe it's written somewhere that's it's only truly charity if no one knows about it. So all these glory seeking religious leaders are by definition sinners an frauds. And to use another rocker's lyrics (Jim Morrison) "You cannot petition the Lord with prayer!"
As for politics, I won't go there, except to say my ballot will most likely be a mix of the party candidates and when in doubt I'll use the words of my grandfather as a guide. Interestingly, he was a childhood friend of the first Mayor Daley and he used to say "I always vote for the challenger, to give someone else a chance to steal". |

James (and others here who know me well), this might surprise you, but...as pissed as I am about what he's done to his family...most of me actually feels sorry for Rev. Ted.
Of course it's possible he was just a run-of-the-mill "do as I say not as I do" hypocrite who deserves his problems, but given what I've read about the guy, including his apology to the flock, I think he *truly believes* everything he's said, and that's sad. He doesn't think he's gay, because in his worldview "gay" and "drug addict" just symptoms of being apart from God.
I hope he comes to realize that gay sex was not his problem -- his problem was the closet and living a lie. Unfortunately, it looks like he's going back to the dead-end theology of his fundy cohorts who will just urge him back into the closet.
These are people with little to no grasp on reality, who honestly believe gays can be "recruited" by the secular culture and that homosexuality can be "cured" by getting right with Christ. I'd probably start snorting drugs off a well-hung hooker's backside too, if I had to live every hour of my life the way he has: Knowing that I'd saved hundreds of thousands of souls for Christ, but that I still wasn't good enough for JC to "cure" my desire to suck cock.
I hope he figures out that he wants cock because the same God he's always believed in made him that way, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Living a lie to your family and friends and everyone in your life -- THAT is a problem.
Some insights, from crazy to creepy, on the guy and his former church. |

| Even before this happened Haggard had the sweaty, panicky smile of a preacher who had just sex with a male prostitute and was afraid that his congregation would find out that he was, after all, only a human being. This only illustrates my theory that organized religion is a crock, and that clergypeople are no different than the rest of us -- they have just found a way to get the rest of us to support them. That excludes me, of course. Watch for my upcoming book, "The BonBon Speaks!" in which I will explain it all for you. |

Sigh. James, you libs are so cute when you're little. But seriously, where was your indignation when Clinton was invading a country du jour to deflect heat from his moral/ethical crisis du jour? Good Lord, man; it's not like Dubya is smart enough to think this "coincidence" stuff up. You give him too much credit. I wish you would keep your self-imposed topic rules intact. This will not help you at my re-education center. On a healing note, I'm voting for a Democrat for US Senate in TN. Most candidates the Republicans are putting out there are as distasteful to conservatives as they are to you folks. Let's get back to reading about the Tigers, or Atlanta traffic, or Dean, or elevator manners. |

He is a sinner and he has fallen. Just like all of us silly humans. Anyway, his acknowledgment and self-recognition sets a good example for those who think they have the right to judge others from ANY pulpit, religious or political. Hope they're paying attention to their lesson.
Dude, Metalica ROCKS! Do Jethro Tull next... ;^) |

The root of most issues, both the political and religious, are a direct result of most Americas being a very weak minded people. Politicians and Religious figures have found that Americans like to be told what they want to hear not what they need to hear. That coupled with our Media that can find the bad in any topic and we have a total mess. Americans are perfectly happy only getting half the story and the media only provides the side of the story that stinks the most because it will create more interest. On the news today it is all about a "religious figure" who is saying one thing and doing another. I agree he is a scum ball. But why not have the story about the pastor of the church my neighbor goes to. While this other guy is getting a knobber and trashing the respect of all religions, my neighbor's pastor spent his weekend help sifting thru the burnt out remains of an apartment fire, collecting any remains of 6 famililies belonging before the pounding rains started yesterday. He worked 36 hours straight in the rain collectinge shreads of these strangers lives. He rallied others in his parish to help with donations of money and clothes. To put the cherry on top, not one of the families displaced attended his church. Wether you are religious or not, that was a noble act and it never even made the news. Americans don't want to hear that. The media highlights all the horrible things that our soliders are doing. All of the stories revolve around a couple dozen people doing something stupid acts. The media takes it from there with help from the politicians fueling it on, they twist the story to make it look like we are doing nothing over there but torturing and insulting the Iraqi people. Where are the accounts of the relief efforts? Where are the accounts of the good deeds that our soliders are doing? No No, we can't have that. The fact that after years of neglect the Iraqi infrastructre is being update to meet minimum sanitation requirements. Un-reported. Where are the stories about the over half million immunizations that have been distributed? Nope! What about the fact that attendance in schools is up over 80% in over 2000 schools that have been built in just the past two years. No we can't have that. Why would we talk about those items at all. They are not nearly as exciting as talking about 5 prisioners that were forced to build a pyramid. I also think that it is amusing that people blame the current state of the military on the current party holding office. The senior ranking military officials have made careers of working for the military. Those careers span more than a half dozen presidential terms. The tide will turn as it always has and the military that is "too strong" will become military that is "too weak" and oddly enought it will still be comprised by the same hard working people that have dedicated their lives to defending our freedom the best they can.
I don't care where you stand on religion, politics or the war in Iraq, just make sure what ever opinion you hold it is based on getting all sides of the story. Make sure that instead of choking on the crap the media spoon feeding us look for the good that is out there. It IS out there. |

Wha wha wha...? Of *course* we would consider the current party holding office responsible for the military - they would include the Commander in Chief and his/her :^) Secretary of Defense and the Armed Forces leaders/commanders. This is the structure of our government.
The media is just trying to compensate for their total sycophantic behavior early in W's second term. Of course I agree with you and myriad good deeds have been done by good people, but some infrastructure rebuilding has also been necessitated by our own bombings - and presence.
And -- remember, it's the ratings/readers game for advertising dollar, it's not really a mission to bring balanced reporting of both good and evil - it's evil all the way, woo hoo!
A blog poster on deadspin is using the handle 'Paging Mr. Foley'...hee hee.
No need to apologize for any rant here (right, James)!!!!!! |
